Locals Rave, You Say...Meh

Was wondering what eating establishments are on the list of local favorites where you live that you find rather bland.

Went to Luigi's in Akron last night. I've been there a number of times because the wife, a native Akronite, constantly raves about the place. After living here for 6 years, I know she is not alone, and that it is one the local hot spots everyone in town knows about. However, I just don't get it. Except for a really good salad, the food is pretty mediocre. Their pastas are okay, but nothing special; their pizza sauce leaves a lot to desire; and their sandwiches are down right poor.

Also on my list for the Akron area is the Swenson hamburger and every chicken joint in the county.

A friend and I were just talking about Luigi's tonight. We get the pizza once every couple of years just because we feel as though we should. It is one of the greasiest pizzas I have ever come across. My friend said it has been ten years since he has been there and thinks he should give it another try.

I am not a fan of Strickland's Frozen Custard. Once they started franchising the quality went right out the window.

I went to a Michael Symon restaurant last year. I was told to have their burger because it was the greatest thing ever. It had pork in it and an egg on the burger. Tasted like a giant egg mcmuffin, which I hate.

Tommy's Pizza. It's all right, but there's at least 5 other places around campus that are better. The oldtimers always say it's a must to stop there when coming back to campus.

Meh:
-Swenson's Burgers - I like my burgers salty rather than sweet
-Columbus style pizza - wedges people, not squares. Especially the Pizza Cottage. Somehow that place got the rep of being the best pizza in the Buckeye Lake area.
-I HATE Steak & Shake. Never left that place full.
-Buca de Beppo - overpriced and just a big meh from me
-Dave's Cosmic Subs - I don't like cold subs, but there is nothing special about Dave's for me. Dave is kind of like the Soup Nazi as well. I still go there once or twice a year when the weather is good to enjoy the CF scenery.
-Jimmy Johns - Talk to me when you have hot subs
-Penn Station - overpriced small quantity
-Melt - I know Man v. Food was there, but after a 2.5 hour wait I was underwhelmed.

Local shit worth the hype:
-Panini's/Primanti Bros. (all the same to me) sandwiches are amazing. Just started eating them this year.
-Skyline coney's - I don't get the whole chili on pasta thing, but I love the skyliners. The only thing better is to buy a can of the chili and put it on Nathan's hot dogs.
-Handel's Ice Cream
-East Coast Custard
-Parasons is good cheap Italian in the Akron area
-Rockne's (except for the ghetto one downtown Cuyahoga Falls that isn't part of the chain.) If you haven't been there one order of fries is good for 2. I'm a big eater and I go with the half sandwich, soup, and split an order of fries with the wife.
-Dibella's Subs - If you are in any of these cities and are looking for something to eat give it a try. DiBella's Old Fashioned Submarines I've never had a real Philly Cheese-steak, but I can't imagine a better sandwich than the Dibella's Cheese-steak.

Pretty much concur on previous posts...

Luigi's is OK... was great in college cuz they were open so late
Swensons is OK... bit sweet but different enuf that I like them
Parassons - best value in town
I am covering my ears about Stricklands... I refuse to believe they have changed... I am in denial... waaaahhhh
Rockne's Firestone salad... man did I like those

Barberton chicken - bestest ... White House #1, rest tied for #2.. I miss them but wasteline does not miss them

Tangiers - OK .. you go there for the atmosphere.. not the food
Ken Stewarts is pretty good .. mostly due to the sauces
Diamond Grill is pretty good .. not sure it deserves the rave it gets

Ohhh.. and I have had the real deals in Philly Cheesesteaks... but there's a couple greasy dives near Princeton U that gives them a run for their money... you can easily make your own that will beat anything you can buy.. if you start out with better meat, everything else is easy

is there still a Panini's somewhere in Columbus? I remember going down on campus back in the day after partying and going there and they put cole slaw and fries right on the sandwich! It was awesome, but I assumed it closed down when they upgraded that area. Plus I moved away but now we're back in Cbus so I was just curious.

Not sure if I could tackle one of those anymore.......LOL

In-n-Out Burger. What a huge disappointment; Steak & Shake leaves them far behind.

Honestly, Wendy's leaves them far behind.

I completely agree, overrated...

I also thought Pat's and Geno's were very, very overrated in Philly (which is a shit hole)... Hoagie Haven, on the other hand, is a greasy paradise...

Patsy's and New York style coal-fired pizzas, on the other hand, are even to underrated...
