LB Tommy ‘Two Thumbs’ Eichenberg (Rose Bowl Def MVP, All B1G, All-American, Las Vegas Raiders)

TOMMY EICHENBERG NAMED LOTT IMPACT TROPHY PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE WEEK

Another Ohio State defender has been honored for his performance in the Buckeyes’ win over Penn State.

While J.T. Tuimoloau filled up his trophy case this week with awards like Walter Camp Defensive Player of the Week, Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week and Bronko Nagurski Award Player of the Week, Tommy Eichenberg received the Lott IMPACT Trophy Player of the Week award for the second week in a row. Eichenberg receives the award after recording a season-high 15 total tackles in Ohio State’s 44-31 victory.

He becomes the first two-time recipient of the Lott IMPACT Trophy Player of the Week award this year. The Lott IMPACT Trophy chooses its weekly award winner from players who are on the watch list for the season-long award, so Tuimoloau was not eligible to win the award despite his dominant performance against Penn State.

Just sayin': Yeah, J. T. Tuimoloau wasn't eligible; so their weekly "Impact Award" goes to the 2nd best impact player on the team. Maybe they should change that policy and/or expand the watchlist. Give it to Tuimoloau and just add him to the watchlist, etc.

ON TOMMY EICHENBERG
  • "I think if you try to recognize a Big Ten linebacker, it's Tommy Eichenberg."
  • Day said Eichenberg "has been playing at a high level" this season and is doing a great job as the "leader of Ohio State's defense."
  • Day said Eichenberg and Steele Chambers have been hogging some of the snaps for the Ohio State linebacker room but believe they have earned it. He thinks the other linebackers have "cut their teeth" on special teams and have excellent at keeping a team-first mindset.

According to Harrison, Eichenberg is playing with two broken hands.

How?

How? is he playing?......Well, VERY WELL (i.e. 13 tackles vs maryland).....

LATHAN RANSOM, TOMMY EICHENBERG BATTLE THROUGH HAND INJURIES TO LEAD OHIO STATE’S DEFENSE AGAINST MARYLAND

Harrison said their toughness inspired the rest of the Ohio State defense.

“Just seeing them out there with the injuries they have, kind of makes us be like, ‘We’re cool,’” Harrison said. “If Tommy’s out there with two broken hands and Lathan’s dealing with what he’s dealing with and they’re out there on the field playing, like what do I gotta say if I'm a little sore or my knee’s hurt or so and so. I just gotta go play. We all gotta go play.”

Ransom, likewise, said he was inspired to play through his injury by Eichenberg.

“Tommy's playing with two messed-up hands,” Ransom said. “What's my excuse not to go out there and play?”

Despite his two injured hands, Eichenberg continued to play like an All-American against Maryland, recording at least 13 tackles in a game for the fourth time this season to bring his tackle total for the year to 105 – the most any Buckeye has had in a season since 2015.
