Defense carries Miramar to victory over Plantation

Plantation, led by juniors Ryan Shazier and Jerome Howard, had some early success holding the Patriots' offense in check. But the Patriots finally got rolling late in the second quarter when quarterback Ryan Williams connected with Dante Chambers for 13 yards, Malcolm Lewis for 15 yards and Ivan McCartney for 15 more on back-to-back-to-back plays.

Shazier is another prospect that Coach Steve Davis is real high on. After watching him play you can see why. Shazier plays with a non-stop motor. He is a relentless player that will go hard until the whistle blows. He has the ability to give you a pass rush off the edge or play the run. He is very explosive off the ball and will give most offensive tackles fit at the high school level. We feel that Shazier could possibly move to linebacker in college. It does not matter if its on special teams or chasing a running back down from behind, Shazier must be accounted for at all times. If you ignore him for one play, he will disrupt what the offense is trying to do.

Teammate of Jeremy Cash...currently lists offers from FSU, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State, South Carolina, South Florida, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

NCAA football recruit Ryan Shazier was the top defender at the Miami Under Armour Combine - ESPN

DAVIE, Fla. -- Heading into Sunday's Under Armour combine, the defensive line was expected to grab the headlines. Less than an hour after the beginning of testing, the day turned into the Ryan Shazier (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Plantation) show.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Shazier has been on the radar of college coaches since his junior season during which he had more than 80 tackles and en eye-popping 19 sacks. That production was followed by offers from the likes of Florida, Florida State, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Wisconsin and South Carolina among others. On Sunday, he showed exactly why he is quickly becoming one of the most heavily recruited prospects in the country.

Shazier, simply put, put on a testing display that will be tough to match for any linebacker from coast-to-coast. He clocked a blistering 4.44 40-yard dash to go with a 4.56 pro agility shuttle, a 7.56 L-cone, which is used to test change of direction and quickness, and best of the day 38-inch vertical and 10-foot, 4-inch broad jump. The South Florida defender also added 11 reps of 185 on the bench press.

"I think I did real well," said Shazier. "To me, I think I was one of the best players out there, but there is always room for improvement. I expected to test well. I know I'm a 4.4 guy, but I didn't expect to run in the 4.4s today,"

The drill work and 7-on-7 to follow was more important for Shazier. He posted his gaudy numbers for Plantation playing defensive end, but he is beginning the process of moving to linebacker, where he will play at the next level. He quickly displayed the same quickness, smarts and motor at linebacker as he has at end.

"I think I did real well at linebacker. I had one interception in 7-on-7s and nobody caught a pass on me in drills, so I think it went real good," Shazier said.

While Shazier stole the show, he wasn't the only top-notch performer. Here is a look at some of the standout players on defense.

Highlights from UA Miami combine - ESPN

Shazier separating from pack

One of the prospects in attendance with an already sizeable amount of offers was linebacker Ryan Shazier (Plantation, Fla./Plantation) and he did his best to prove why schools have shown early interest. He has a good frame to develop and also displayed fine athleticism. The linebacker/rush end posted an impressive 4.44 40 time, proving he as the speed to play sideline-to-sideline and run with tight ends or running backs. He also showed good explosiveness posting a combine best 10-4 broad jump and a 38-inch vertical.

Shazier plays mostly defensive end in high school and though he could practice at linebacker this spring he admits he will likely be back at end in the fall. Shazier will need some experience at linebacker, but shows the tools to be a good prospect at outside linebacker. However, his experience at end could also pay dividends because he could eventually put his hand on the ground or at least be used there in pass-rushing situations.

Shazier has Oklahoma offer, Texas interest - ESPN

The top performer at Sunday's Under Armour combine in Davie, Fla. was Ryan Shazier (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Plantation). The 6-foot-1, 200-pound pass-rushing terror tested off the charts, showing exactly why he is pulling in offers from around the country.

Shazier clocked one of the fastest 40-yard dash times of the day at 4.44 and backed it up with a 4.56 pro agility shuttle and a 7.56 L-cone time. He also tied for the best vertical of the day, at 38-inches, and bench pressed 185-pounds 11 times, finishing with the top testing performance of the day.

The uber-talented junior has been on the radar in South Florida for a while as a pass-rushing defensive end to the tune of 87 tackles and 19 sacks this season. This spring, he will play linebacker for the South Florida Express 7-on-7 team as he works to transition to the position in preparation for the next level.

FL DE/LB already has several offers, one from USC
By Eric Guimaraes
February 23, 2010

DE/LB Ryan Shazier (6-2 201) of Plantation, FL has nine offers thus far including one from USC. The others are from Florida, FSU, Tennessee, Wisconsin, South Florida, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Oklahoma. He is also hearing from Clemson, Georgia, LSU, UCLA, and Miami among others. He likes what he is hearing from USC. "I talk to Coach Jeep (Hunter) a lot and he says that they would like to use me as a hybrid, like they did with Eric Norwood," said Shazier. "He also told me that Steve Spurrier should still be there." Shazier has not taken in any junior days and is waiting for the summer to visit schools. "My mom is sick so it's kind of hard to go right now," he said. "I'm going to make a top ten list and visit five of those schools. I'll save the other five for official visits." As a junior, he had 87 tackles, 22 for loss, 19 1/2 sacks, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, one touchdown, and a blocked field goal attempt. Shazier says he has no favorites and everyone is even with him right now.

Shazier Plans to Commit by Start of the Senior Season
February 23, 2010 by Luke Stampini

...
Shazier has seen several offers come his way over the course of his junior year, including some national powers. ?I have Florida, Florida State, Mississippi State, South Carolina, South Florida, Wisconsin, Tennessee, and Oklahoma.?

He also stated he is getting interest from Miami, UCLA, and LSU, despite not receiving an offer from any of the three. Shazier also feels the Hurricanes are close to extending an offer.

As spring practice for many colleges get started here in the next couple weeks, Shazier is planning on making stops at several in-state schools to catch one of their workouts. ?I?m going to try to catch Florida, Miami, South Florida?s and Florida State?s spring practices,? said Shazier.

Those spring practices as well as summer camps universities will help make Shazier?s decision, as he wants to get it out of the way by the end of August. ?I think I?m going to make my decision before my senior season so it doesn?t distract my team.?

I like this offer. If he can keep that speed and add some mass to his frame, he could be a Thad Gibson-type of player for us on the edge.

The fact that he looks a lot like Sticky Fingaz from Onyx is a bonus. That mean look sure worked for Thad!
