Perkins shot-putter and discus thrower Aaron Mawhirter concluded his career in spectacular fashion, leaving an imprint on a track and field program that is regarded as one of the best in Northwest Ohio.
At the Division II State Meet at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus earlier this month, Mawhirter placed second in the shot put with a throw of 59-5 1/4. He also finished fifth in discus with a throw of 168-11.
Mawhirter had much success throughout the year on his trail to the state meet.
At regionals, he placed first in shotput and fourth in discus and was the district champion in both events. Mawhirter also placed first in discus and second in shot put at the Sandusky Bay Conference Championship. He was also part of Perkins? conference and district championship wins.
Mawhirter appeared at the 2012 state meet, placing fourth in discus and sixth in shot put. For Aaron, the experience of last season contributed to his success this year.
?Last year, I had the philosophy of being serious about everything and that I wasn?t really going to have any fun, it was all about winning,? Mawhirter said. ?This year, it was more about going out there, having a good time and throwing my best because I throw my best when I?m relaxed and I?m not trying to press as much.?
Mawhirter is glad to end his track career on a high note and acknowledges his coaches to what he has been able to accomplish.
?The throwing program at Perkins has always been great with coach (Jeremy) Blakely and coach (Gary) Lill,? Mawhirter said. ?I knew my freshman year that coach Blakely and coach Lill would put me in a great position to succeed and I definitely did that.?
Mawhirter?s athletic career will continue collegiately, not in track, but in football.
Mawhirter will be part of Ohio State?s football team as a walk-on, playing at the linebacking position.
?It has always been a dream to play for Ohio State football,? Mawhirter said. ?I was contacted in early March by the coaches. When I took my visit there, I couldn?t pass it up. It?s very exciting.?
