I am going to buy a new laptop for my sister for Christmas, to help her get through college.

I personally have only owned desktops. Currently I have a Sony Vaio and I love it.

Could someone tell me a little about AMD processors versus Intel. Also, I've heard bad things about Intel Celeron? Should I be looking at Intel duo core?

Any advice would be great. I am probably only looking to spend $600 to $700.

I'm thinking about Dell, Acer, Gateway, etc.

How much better is Core Duo 2 vs Core Duo?

Probably not worth $200 more at a similar clock speed.

Especially since Intel has priced the CD2 chips exactly the same as their CD predecessors at the same speed. The main performance gains will be for the 2ghz & faster chips as that is where the CD2's bump up to 4MB of L2 cache. Below that they have 2MB and all of the original CDs have 2MB as well.

You shouldn't be paying extra for CD2 vs CD.

I'm looking at a quote for a Dell Inspiron 6400 that jumps by $200 if I go with the CD2. Here is the comparison:

Intel Core Duo T2050 (1.60GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 533MHz FSB) [Included in Price]
Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.00GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 667MHz FSB) [add $200]

As you can see, the CD2 includes the 4MB, versus 2MB for the regular CD. If going with the regular CD will mean my BP pages take a second or two longer to load up, it's no big deal to me. I don't run video games on my personal laptop but I do watch DVD's on it occasionally. But those ran just fine even on my old Celeron laptop so I don't think that will make any difference. Believe it or not, loading up a page here is probably the most difficult thing that I will be asking of a new laptop.

If that is the case either machine will serve you well.

Given the spec difference 25% higher clock, double the cache & faster FSB the more expensive machine is probably worth the $200 difference.

That being said the extra horsepower isn't really something that you personally are going to need.

Save the two bills and have no regrets.
