Tennessee recruiting: The gift that goes on giving

Doubtless you?ve read the rather amazing story by esteemed AJC.com colleague Michael Carvell regarding Tennessee?s pitch to high school juniors. If you haven?t, click the link and do so right now. It?ll open in a new window, so you can come back here when you?re done.
The Vol coaches? idea of how to mold and influence young minds is rather basic: Rip off your shirt and start screaming. (I know this works for me whenever I want to make a nuanced point with the Bradley offspring.) Tennessee apparently borrowed this tactic from Ole Miss, where chief recruiter Ed Orgeron worked as head coach before getting fired. (The link is to an archived post on The Rant.)
And Ole Miss stole it from Southern Cal, where both Orgeron and Lane Kiffin, who figures to last maybe two seasons as Tennessee?s head coach, were assistants. The Trojans? bit of lunacy can be viewed on this YouTube video, which was offered on the blog Dr. Saturday. And yes, that?s indeed a shirtless Pete Carroll smack in the midst of the manly flesh.
Here?s a 2005 ESPN.com story from Ivan Maisel, in which Orgeron does not confirm or deny the alleged Oxford Wild Boyz sighting. And here we should point out that Nature Boy Ed managed to win three whole SEC games in three seasons with the Rebels.

As you?ve gathered from the Photoshopped image above (found on the Vol fan site Losers With Socks), this story has inspired all manner of artistic renderings on the blogosphere. The best, by a shadowy Internet presence known as LSUfreek, was splashed on the pro-Gator site Every Day Should Be Saturday. Now for the obligatory disclaimer: It?s not entirely clear which Tennessee coaches were shirtless during the staged insanity ? insert obligatory Phillip Fulmer joke here ? but the imagination runs riot. Monte Kiffin, Lane?s dad and defensive coordinator, just turned 69. Yowser!

According to Jeffrey and Wilson, Kiffin told Jeffrey that if he chose the Gamecocks, he would
end up pumping gas for the rest of his life like all the other players from that state who had
gone to South Carolina.

Jeffrey was doing his best to stay awake at that point, but that comment from Kiffin woke
him up. He clearly hasn't forgotten it, either.

"He said it, but it's not worth talking about," Jeffrey said.

Every time Kiffin opens his mouth I gain an even greater appreciation for Jim Tressel.

Florida players: Kiffin's comments make it personal - SEC - ESPN

Florida coach Urban Meyer has said very little publicly about some of the comments
directed at him by first-year Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin. But inside the Gators' lair?
That's a different story. Several Florida players say that pictures of Kiffin are pasted
throughout their locker room, and they're still fuming over what they say was a blatant
show of disrespect for their coach.

"I couldn't believe what he said," Florida junior safety Ahmad Black said. "Not trying to
be cocky or anything, but we've beaten them four years in a row ... by a lot, too. But
taking shots at our coach is like taking shots at us. We're family. It's definitely personal now."


Florida cornerback Joe Haden said when word started to spread about Kiffin accusing
Meyer of cheating that Meyer and the players all started texting each other.
"I guess (Kiffin) was doing that for his team, but he could have done that behind closed
doors," Haden said. "To put our coach out there like that for something he didn't do was
crazy. Coach Meyer is one of the best coaches in college football, and he's like a father
to a lot of the players on this team.

You can bet ESPN will be thumping this drum, trying to get interest for what would not be such a marquee game as it was in the Spurrier/Fulmer years, given the Vols many problems the last several seasons.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Three turnovers stymied Tennessee's first-team offense and ignited its first-team defense during the Volunteers' first scrimmage under new coach Lane Kiffin.

Kiffin says he's pleased with the way the Saturday practice went, despite the turnovers.

The 84-play scrimmage didn't do much to clear up the competition at quarterback among Jonathan Crompton, B.J. Coleman and Nick Stephens -- all of whom saw playing time last season.
