Can anyone here recommend a make and model of KVM switch that they're happy with? If there's a brand to avoid, I'd appreciate hearing that as well.

What are you trying to hook up? If it's just two computer to a monitor I'd recommend this: Iogear

Works well and is relatively cheap.

At work we have CYBEX KVM switches. Avoid them at all costs

I personally like the Belkin version, but beyond those two brands, my experience is rather limited.

For now, it will be two pcs hooked up to a KVM with a single monitor. Am I correct that a ps2 setup should be less problematic than a USB KVM?

Yeah, generally ps2 connections have fewer problems.

In my experience KVM boxes with physical switches for each channel tend to have a lower failure rate than the ones that use keyboard commands and an onscreen display...FWIW.

Linkskey is the best bang for your buck. I've run these on our desktops for 4:3 resolutions up to 1280x1024 on CRTs without flicker, screen artifacts, or ghosted images, and 16:9/16:10 LCDs with resolutions up to 1680x1050. $23 gets you the KVM and two heavy gauge shielded all-in-one cables. Much cheaper than the Belkin Omnis, and far more capable and reliable.

We have at least a dozen of these in our company, both the 2-port and 4-port models, and I have two at home. Never heard a complaint about them, and that includes under conditions with heavy EMI that have brought other KVMs and monitors to their knees.
