Krakauer - Where Men Win Glory - The Odyssey of Pat Tillman

It has since been announced that Krakauer's new book, The Hero, will be released by publisher Doubleday on October 14, 2008. The Hero will be about former NFL football player Pat Tillman, who enlisted in the US Army after 9/11 to become an Army Ranger and was eventually killed in action under suspicious circumstances in Afghanistan. In addition to performing research in Afghanistan, Krakauer was able to interview members of Tillman's family and read Tillman's diaries and letters, to prepare for writing the book. Doubleday's David Drake says Krakauer's interest in Tillman reflects "the fascination he has with extreme people, who push themselves to the very limits of their capabilities".

Really looking forward to this. Interesting subject for him to take on, given that Tillman could be considered the anti-Chris McCandless.

Didn't this book get held up for a while? I'm assuming all this resolved now. I could have sworn I read a couple months ago that he gave up this project over some red tape.

you're right...

Holding the hero - Off the Shelf - Boston.com

Publisher Doubleday announced last week that "The Hero," Jon Krakauer's much-anticipated book about Pat Tillman, the NFL footballer who volunteered for army duty and was killed in Afghanistan in 2004, will not appear in October as scheduled. Doubleday had planned a 500,000-copy first printing.

Publisher's Weekly online reported that Krakauer, author of previous bestsellers "Into the Wild" and "Into Thin Air," is said to be dissatisfied with the manuscript, which presumably means he doesn't think it's ready, and that he's holding on to it "indefinitely."

That's annoying for Krakauer's fans, but perhaps speaks well of him, unless he's had some sort of change of heart and doesn't want to do the book, or unless there is some problem with members of the Tillman family, which had cooperated with the project.

Krakauer's Tillman Book Due in September

By Lynn Andriani -- Publishers Weekly, 2/9/2009 12:15:00 PM

Doubleday has announced a pub date for Jon Krakauer?s previously postponed book on football star turned Army Ranger Pat Tillman. The house will release Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman (formerly titled The Hero) on September 22 with a 600,000-copy first printing.
Krakauer?s book was originally set to be published in October 2008, but in June, Doubleday said that Krakauer, author of Into Thin Air, Into the Wild and other books, was unhappy with the manuscript. Publication was postponed without a firm rescheduling date. Now slated for a September release, the book draws on Tillman?s journals and letters, interviews with his wife and friends, conversations with the soldiers who served alongside him, and research Krakauer performed in Afghanistan

I'll be honest - my opinion of Into Thin Air suffered considerably when I learned that Lloyd Carr used it as a motivational ploy for the Vulvarines during the 1997 season.

Quick story about Pat Tillman when I was at ASU. I think he was a senior at ASU when I was a sophomore.

Anyways, I was with a bunch of my friends and my girlfriend at this little bar near campus called Fumbles. Fumbles had a $5 all you can drink night and everybody went there and got hammered. So I was hanging out with my girlfriend and one of her girlfriends at the bar for most of the night. A bunch of football players were there including Pat Tillman. I'm not gonna lie, my girlfriend was one of the hottest chicks in that bar and that's not easy at ASU. I ended up leaving my girlfriend at the bar with her friend and I left with some of my friends. My girlfriend was going to come back to my place after she left the bar.

She shows up at my place about an hour later with her friend and she goes on to tell me this story about this guy that came up to her as soon as I left. She said he came up to her as she was sitting on the bar stool and put his crotch on her knee. My girlfriend was obviously grossed out and was like, what are you doing? This guys friend was like, don't you know who this is? My girlfriend was like, "no," and he said, "this is Pat Tillman." My girlfriend was like, I don't give a fuck who you are, get your crotch off my knee. Anyways, I guess Pat and his friend walked away after the crotch on the knee trick didn't work. My girlfriend asked me if I knew he was, and of course I knew, but there wasn't any way in hell I was whopping Pat Tillman's ass.

I was never too fond of him after that.

If there's one thing I'm not, it's a liar!

So my girlfriend at the time made up the story even though she didn't know who Pat Tilman was??? That makes a lot of sense.

I can understand you being pissed if you are one of Pat Tilman's friends and don't want to believe he would do something like that, but sorry to break it to you that he did and there is no reason for me to believe my girlfriend would make up that story.
