Sentell: Jameis Winston not your average sophomore

The play of sophomores often leads to losses.

Coaches play high school sophomores because they have no other options.

Sophomores are more likely to snap a towel in the locker room than fling a football 50 yards with a snap of their wrist.

Hueytown's Jameis Winston is the exception. That name will likely be printed in The News as much as "Chizik" and "Saban" over the next three years.

Hueytown's sophomore quarterback is 6-foot-3 and weighs 173 pounds. The verbal scholarship offers he has from Alabama and Auburn rewrite the definition of sophomoric.

"Those coaches told me to 'Stay out of trouble' and 'Keep my grades up' and 'Sky is the limit' this summer," Winston said.

He's elusive in the pocket. He throws a tight deep ball and can place it in tight coverage windows.

Jameis Winston, QB, Hueytown (Ala.)
Playing in the state's rigorous 6A classification, Jameis Winston was a pleasant surprise to the Alabama high school football scene, starting at quarterback and leading Hueytown to a 6-5 record.

Coach Jeff Smith, however, knew what to expect. "We did a little kids camp out here six years ago. He looked good then. He's just grown," Smith said.

Winston threw for 12 touchdowns and over 700 yards. The 6-3, 180-pound phenom can pass, run and even block, according to Smith.

"It's hard for me to talk like this, because it makes me sound real arrogant," Smith said. "But there is not a better ninth grader in the state than him. He might be one of the best freshman in the whole Southeast."

Does Bama want him as a QB too?

Yep, which I thought was a little unusual since they typically prefer a pro-style QB. It's early, but I was told he's not the top guy in-state in that class but more like a top 5 guy, apparently it's supposed to be one of the deepest years ('12) in-state for them in some time.

It's not really unusual...they still have Star Jackson on their roster.

Would be surprised if we could pry him away from Saban. Although, like someone said, they do run a pro-style offense. This guy should not be a strictly pro offense IMO. It's a waste of his talent. I don't know, recruiting upsets happen. IF we stick with him and keep talking to him, we may be able to accomplish something with him...

The next wave: Recruiters chasing underclassmen, and Hueytown soph may be biggest catch of all

...
"Anybody who has watched his DVD has offered," Hueytown coach Matt Scott said. "I mailed out his DVD on a Saturday to Ohio State. By Monday morning, they were making an offer."
...
"We only had 35 percent of the offense last year," Scott said. "We only had two running plays. I love screens, and we didn't have any.
"That's why coaches are blown away by the DVD. The thing is, he's only going to get better. A lot better."
...
"He's young, but plays like a seasoned veteran. He has a strong arm, doesn't make bad decisions and has the ability to escape when the pocket collapses," Bone said.
"We project him to rank as one of the nation's best prospects as a senior and is already the top-rated recruit in Alabama for the class of 2012."
...
"I'm going into podiatry," Winston said. "At Miami, you can take classes in undergraduate school, but you still have to go to medical school."
...
"Last summer at Alabama's camp, he ran a 4.62 (40-yard dash)," Scott said. "I would be shocked if he couldn't run a 4.5 now.
"But the thing I was most impressed about him from the start was his mental ability. Things he's never done before, he picks up instantly."
