For University of Notre Dame football fans, the era that spanned 1941-53 under coach Frank Leahy and included four Associated Press national championships is one of the most treasured.
It also has a special place in the heart of Pickerington High School North junior Jake Butt.
The Fighting Irish went a combined 28-0-1 from 1947-49, winning titles in both '47 and '49. According to the Notre Dame Alumni Association, Leahy said that "pound for pound, there was no better player on the Notre Dame team than our 185-pound guard, Bob Lally." Lally lettered each of those three seasons.
A year before he died in 2008, Lally pulled out some mementos from that time that Butt, one of his grandchildren, will never forget.
"This one time he got out his national championship rings and I got to hold them in my hand," Butt said. "It put in perspective what I want to do."
Among those things is playing college football, and it is likely that the 6-foot-6, 225-pounder will get that opportunity.

North took advantage of an early fumble by Reynoldsburg running back Jordan Jones for the first score of the game with 9 minutes, 12 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Jones was hit and fumbled at his own 26-yard line and the Panthers recovered and scored five plays later on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Zach Olszewski to Jake Butt.
North struck again with a 79-yard touchdown run by Godwin Igwebuike with 4:13 remaining in the first quarter. Igwebuike returned an interception 21 yards for a touchdown early in the second quarter and Butt caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Olszewski late in the first half. Igwebuike finished with 11 carries for 135 yards.
The four-star prospect out of Pickerington (Ohio) North, added scholarship offers from Syracuse, Duke and Northwestern.
Butt's grandfather played football at Notre Dame for Frank Leahy, and the Irish are the program standing out early. He's looking to make it back to South Bend before the season ends or for a junior day in the winter. Other schools Butt is hearing from include Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Kentucky, Miami, Stanford, Oregon, Cincinnati and Purdue.
Olszewski's first touchdown pass, a 41-yarder to Jake Butt, gave the Panthers a 7-0 lead.
Butt had six receptions for 94 yards and two touchdowns.
