iPhone issues and troubleshooting

  • Thought I'd start a thread with all who have the inevitable issues with their iPhones.

We bought my son a 3GS for Christmas. It has been his pride and joy until today when his "home" button stopped working. We have rebooted the phone, updated the software, made sure it was fully charged, etc, etc to no avail. We have Apple Care and have an appointment to have it looked at (I fear a hardware problem).

Here's what immediately pops into my head:

    1. Tell him to wash his hands after he eats.
    2. Tell him not to spill shit on his phone.
    3. Tell him the button works without pressing it so hard his cuticles turn white.

It's funny how I can use a particular cell phone or TV remote perfectly fine for five years, and my kids can break buttons on this stuff in three months.

So, yeah ... I'm going with negligence, neglect, and abuse not covered under warranty.

I've had my 3Gs for a year now, no real problems at all. I've been known to break a few things (I threw my phone into high street returning an IO to someone's OH my freshman year. And yes I was drunk). I think it's a well constituted phone, you just have to be careful with it. I think that I kind of take care of things now that I am out of school and it's on me if something breaks or gets destroyed.

Hoping for a little assistance on this one. Trivial, but annoying.

I am not certain what happened or when it occurred, but at some point recently my iPhone 4s erased my ringtones. I've gone into iTunes on my computer, synced them again, got the checked boxes, and still nothing on my phone. Any thoughts?

Do you backup and archive the backups? If so, bomb the phone and restore a previous backup. That usually works for me with my laptop when things get buggy. Never tried it with an iPhone, but I would venture to guess that is all the guys at the Apple store would do.

I "believe" that I have backed-up the phone on to my computer. I will have to check that.

I've searched a LOT of threads and links on Google, and haven't seen one that directly addresses what I've needed (like the one you linked).

The ringtones that I have used are free downloads from Ohio State. I have them on my computer. I've synced them, and still the phone won't take.

Have you tried to recreate them? Possibly the file you have is corrupt? Try making a new one since this issue has come up?

Are you sure you have the files and not symlinks to them? I had this happen a while ago, dragged a bunch of books into itunes from a portable hard drive, synced, disconnected drive. Next time I synced my books were gone, went looking and the system (not sure of it was windows or itunes) just created shortcuts, really irritated me.

I'll have to try doing this.

What did you do to remedy the situation? This sounds very similar to what has happened with me.
