  • The Buckeyes open the Big 10 part of their schedule with a 4 game series vs the Iowa Hawkeyes at Bill Davis Stadium in Columbus. The Bucks are 14-3 and on a 13 game win streak. The Hawks come in at 10-5 having defeated beaten Illinois State 15-3 Wednesday in Bloomington, IL.

The Hawks are 10-5 on the year, with split series against Fresno State and Dallas Baptist and a 4 game sweep of North Dakota State.

    More on the Hawks

KNOCKING THEM IN ? Junior catcher Dusty Napoleon leads the Big Ten with 22 RBIs. Over the weekend, he had a career-high five in Friday's second game.
Napoleon has been on fire lately, raising his batting average to .388.
POWER SURGE ? In their first 14 games, the Hawkeyes have hit nine home runs - just one short of the team's total from last year. Last season, Iowa didn't hit its first home run until April 2 (Ben Geelan vs. Ohio State).
Three players - Travis Sweet, Jason White and Wes Freie - have two each, which ties them for last year's team lead.
SCHURZ THE STOPPER ? Closer Mike Schurz is doing well in his new role as the Iowa closer. So far, he is 3-0 with a pair of saves. He has 14 strikeouts, just two walks and has yet to give up a run in 10 innings pitched.
GRYZWA GOES DEEP ? Hawkeye sophomore Ryan Gryzwa has been clubbing the ball in limited action this season, and is hitting a team-high .429. This past Sunday, Gryzwa hit his first-career home run.
WHITE WALKS ? Senior shortstop Jason White has been demonstrating a keen eye this season, and leads the team with 18 base on balls. He is 10 walks ahead of Kevin Hoef and Dusty Napoleon, who are tied for second.
SWEET ON THE BASEPATHS ? Hawkeye junior Travis Sweet has been a terror for opponents on the basepaths, leading the team with 12 swipes. That total ties him with Andrew Means of Indiana for second in the Big Ten.
BRUNE THE STARTER ? Hawkeye senior Scott Brune made his first start in two years after working exclusively out of the bullpen the last two years.
The Peosta, IA, native impressed, scattering seven hits over six and 1/3 innings, allowing three runs.
Earlier this season, Brune made five relief appearances and had a 3.00 ERA with nine strikeouts. He served as Iowa's primary setup man the last two seasons.

My best guess for Iowa starters is:

    Steve Turnbill - Game 1
    Scott Brune - Game 2
    David Conroy - Game 3
    Mike Jacobs - Game 4

Closer Mike Shurtz is 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA

Minium will fill his spot in the rotation..i guess.

Without Dan D, dont be surprised if Iowa wins this series...they are a very good team, IMO

    My obligatory message.

OSU Softball vs Minnesota starts @ 4pm. Admission is free.

The last two home games, Juarez and Reeder pitched back to back no hitters.

Show up early and take in an inning or two of the ladies' game.

I would hate to see us lose this series at home...

    I will go with 3-1...

    Looking go so far, 40.
Bucks win 12-7 ..I was really worried that we were gonna get popped tonight. Iowa can really hit.

This Iowa team is no joke..and neither is this league. The B10 is full of solid teams..for once. Every team on our schedule has the ability to win a series against us... IMO.

Freshman Cory Kovanda, tagging out Iowa's Travis Sweet in the fifth inning, was a standout in the field and at the plate for Ohio State in its Big Ten opener.

There is a litany of commandments Ohio State baseball players must abide by to avoid the wrath of coach Bob Todd.

No. 1 is to maintain focus at all times. That means no sightseeing.
True freshman second baseman Cory Kovanda of Worthington Kilbourne admitted he sneaked a peek into the grandstands last night. There was mom, dad, his siblings, other relatives, neighbors and friends.

Bucks streak over with 8-0 loss to Iowa. More to come.

In the nightcap of a double-header, Nick Erdman pitched 5 2/3 innings of shutout baseball and Iowa reliever Mike Shurtz cleaned up with 1 1/2 innings allowing no runs to lead the Hawkeyes to an 8-0 win over the Buckeyes to gain a split. The Bucks 15 game win streak came to an end. Jason White and Travis Sweet knocked in 2 apiece for the Hawks. No Buckeye had more than 1 hit as the Hawks outhit the Buckeyes 14-7.

In the first game, the Buckeyes scored 3 in the 4th and 3 more in the 5th to beat Iowa 6-2. Josh Barrera was the winner (3-0). Brune (0-2) took the loss for the Hawkeyes.

I'm thrilled we escaped with a series win. I knew the games were gonna be ugly.

Iowa is far and away the best hitting team we have played so far, and i had a feeling that we were gonna be exposed, but i feel pretty good about our perfromance. We gave up a lot of runs, and yes there is some reason for concern, but its nowhere near as bad as i had thought it was gonna be.

Illinois will be another difficult series...The Illini are a lot like Iowa...big bats and young arms. Illinois likes to run, but we are the toughest team in the league to steal bases on..all those lefties hold 'em close ! Keep an eye on Illinois cather Lars Davis..he is big time, but he doesnt hit lefties very well.

Hopefully Dan Delucia will be back next weekend.

I hated to see the Buckeyes streak stopped at 15, but, at least that left the longest win streak in College baseball to us for a while, it's at 15 now again.

The series win was a big one though, let's keep it up with Illinois. :oh:
