Iowa Hawkeyes Football 2008

I've always liked Iowa. It can't be easy to be in the middle of all the tall corn and put together a competitive Big 10 team. They usually play well in bowl games, the otable exception being the game against USC in 03.

Having said all that, I think Ferentz missed the boat. You take on a program like Iowa, bring it up to parity and then you jump to a program where you can win consistently. Iowa is not ready to elbow its way into Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State territory... well maybe they could push PSU aised for a few seasons, but there's too much in the way of money, fans and tradition in Happy Valley to stay out of the top three mix for long.

Ferentz will join Evanschevski and Hayden Fry in the close, but no cigar hall of fame.

Hard to believe he was one of the hottest names in the coaching profession just a couple years ago. Now, not really.

Scouting the Big Ten: Iowa Hawkeyes

By Doug Harris

DDN predicted order of finish: 9th
Scouting the Hawkeyes
2007: 6-6, 4-4 Big Ten
Last 5 years: 39-23, 23-17 Big Ten
Last bowl: 2006 Alamo, Texas 26, Iowa 24
Coach: Kirk Ferentz
Starters returning: 4 offense, 6 defense
Positive vibes: The front seven on defense should be stout, led by four-year starters at defensive tackle in Mitch King and Matt Kroul. Sophomore Derrell Johnson-Koulianos could be among top receivers in Big Ten.
Negative vibes: The Hawkeyes averaged a league-low 18.5 points per game last year. Tailback position was wiped out by graduation and is a huge question mark.
By the numbers
