    Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Indiana took a 3-0 lead before Ohio State put up its only run of the game in the fourth inning and then the Hoosiers added more two runs in the seventh and five in the top of the ninth to hand the Buckeyes a 10-1 loss in the opening game of the series Friday night at Bill Davis Stadium. The loss by Ohio State was the fifth defeat in five Friday Big Ten games this season. The Buckeyes fell into 10th place in the Big Ten with a 4-10 record, while it is 20-15 overall.

Indiana, which improved to 22-18 overall and 5-12 in the Big Ten, jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a one-out home run by rightfielder Joe Kemp, who launched his eighth home run of the season over the fence in right field to also score Reggie Watson, who led off the game with an infield single. The Hoosiers added another run in the second inning to take a three-run lead. Josh Richardson reached on a one-out single to left and then scored with two outs on a single through the right side by Tyler Cox.

The Buckeyes scored their only run in the bottom of the fourth when Paul Farinacci (Sr., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura) crossed the plate on a passed ball on Hoosier catcher Kurt Weigle. Farinacci doubled down the left-field line with two outs before a walk by Eric Fryer (Fr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) and a base hit by Matt Angle (Fr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) loaded the bases before Weigle's seventh passed ball of the season.

Indiana needed help from Ohio State to add two more runs in the seventh to build a 5-1 lead. OSU starter Dan DeLucia (So., Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) walked Cox to start the inning before Watson bunted down the first base line. Farinacci scooped the ball, turned a fired to Jason Zoeller (So., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy), the Buckeye second baseman who was covering a first, but the errant throw went into right field and Cox was able to advance to third. Kemp drove him in with a single through the left side. That base hit chase DeLucia out of the game and then with runners at first and third and facing his first batter, Rory Mesiter (Fr., Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Madison) was called for a balk trying to pick off Kemp at first and Watson scored to give the Hoosiers a four-run lead.

Five more Indiana runs crossed the plate in the top of the ninth. OSU reliever Trey Fausnaugh (So., Circleville, Ohio/Westfall) walked two of his first three batters and the second Buckeye error of the game, loaded the bases. Ryan Parker singled to left to bring in the first run of the inning and kept the bases loaded before Fausnaugh was replaced by Brett Hatcher (Sr., Bellefontaine, Ohio/Bellefontaine). Hatcher walked his first batter before a wild pitch yielded another run. He then gave up a base hit up the middle by Corby Heckman that scored Parker. A second wild pitch plated the 10th Hoosier run of the game.

Watson finished 4-for-5 to lead Indiana, which out-hit the Buckeyes 11-6. Kemp finished 2-for-5 and drove in three RBI while scoring twice. Six different Buckeyes had one hit and defensively the team committed two errors.

DeLucia went 6.1 innings and gave up five runs (four earned) on nine hits. He did strike out seven batters and walked two in falling to 2-4 with the loss. Josh Lewis improved to 6-3 in going the first six innings before handing the game over to Joe Trucchio, who pitched the final three innings to earn his third save of the season. Lewis had seven strikeouts in allowing one unearned run on five hits. Trucchio struck out two and allowed only one hit.

Ohio State has scored only six runs and has never led in five Friday Big Ten games this season, matched by 37 runs by its opponents.

The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at 4:05 p.m. before concluding the series with a single game on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast on www.wosu.org while the series finale will be broadcast on NPR 820 (WOSU-AM).

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Freshman left-handed pitcher Cory Luebke threw his third complete game of the season and was supported by Ohio State runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings as the Buckeyes handed Indiana a 3-0 shutout victory in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at Bill Davis Stadium.

Luebke, who hails from Maria Stein, Ohio (Marion Local), allowed just four hits and walked one and struck out three to improve to 4-2 on the year. Luebke pitched a nine-inning complete game in a 4-1 win over Wisconsin-Milwaukee and went the distance in a 5-4 loss at Illinois in the second game of a the doubleheader.

Saturday against Indiana, Luebke gave up a lead-off hit and walked a runner in the first inning, but settled down and retired six in a row before giving up a double by Jay Brant, but the Hoosier leftfielder was nabbed at third trying to stretch the shot to the gap in right-center field into a triple. It was the final out of the third. He allowed his final two Hoosier hits in the fifth.

Ohio State took its first lead of the series, scoring the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Jason Zoeller (So., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) reached on a fielding error by Hoosier second baseman Josh Richardson, moved to second on a ground out by Jacob Howell (So., Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) and then scored on a single to right field by Jedidiah Stephen (Jr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah).

The Buckeyes added a run in the fifth inning getting back-to-back hits two-out hits by co-captains Mike Rabin (Sr., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) and Steve Caravati (Sr., Dover, Ohio/Dover). If we can win on sunday, we will be 7-10 in league play and right back in the race for a big ten tourney spot.
After this weekend, Its going to be difficult to make up ground in the standings when you consider who we play in our final 12 league games..At Penn St, at Northwestern, and at home against Minny. A big ten tourney berth would be a huge accomplishment for us IMO. If we could only hit the darn ball, we might just be a pretty good team down the stretch!

I have been happy with Meister's progress and i wouldnt mind if he finished the season as our closer. Trey fausnaugh has been less than impressive.

This has been an odd year in the Big ten. You had to figure Minnesota would be there, and i felt Illanois was going to be strong, but the demise of the Bucks and Michigan has been a total shock to me...i never dreamed we would be in this position.

I wouldn't say Michigan and Ohio State have met their demise just yet. Michigan is now 8-9 in the Big 10 and Ohio State is 7-10. I think Michigan still finishes in the top 4 in the conference and I think OSU ends in 5th.

Both of our squads are getting hot again and will be dangerous come tourny time.

    Bucks win series

OSU took the final game of the Indiana series, 10-8 to win the series 3-1. The Bucks are heating up.

    Steve Caravati waited
    one year and one day
    since his last home run,
    but deposited one just
    inside the left-field foul
    pole to lead off the
    seventh in the 10-8 win
    vs. Indiana.

    May. 1, 2005

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State fought back from a 4-1 deficit with three runs in the fourth and six runs in the next three innings and held on to beat Indiana 10-8 Sunday in the series finale at Bill Davis Stadium. The win clinched the series for the Buckeyes, three games to one, and improved the records to 23-15 overall and 7-10 in the Big Ten.

Trailing by three runs entering the bottom of the fourth inning, Ohio State scored three runs to tie the game. Mike Rabin (Sr., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) led off the inning with a walk and went to second on a single through the right side by Steve Caravati (Sr., Dover, Ohio/Dover). A beautiful bunt down the third-base line by Ronnie Bourquin (So., Canton, Ohio/Canton South) loaded the bases. Indiana coach Bob Morgan lifted starter Brad Davidson in favor of Chris McCombs, but the reliever walked pinch hitter Cody Caughenbaugh (Jr., Newark, Ohio/Licking Valley). His wild pitch yielded another run before a sacrifice by Jason Zoeller (So., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) tied the game.

The Buckeyes were able to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth, turning a lead-off hit up the middle by Eric Fryer (Fr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) into the go-ahead run. Fryer stole second and when Weigle, the Hoosier catcher, bounced the throw to second into centerfield, he went to third before scoring on a passed ball to give Ohio State a 5-4 lead.

Zoeller led off the sixth inning with a double down the left-field line and scored on a single up the middle by Jedidiah Stephen (Jr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) to give the Buckeyes a two-run lead, before they erupted for four runs in the seventh. Caravati led off with his first home run of the season just inside the left-field foul pole. It was the first home run for the senior co-captain since April 30, 2004 at Indiana. Bourquin followed with a single to center and then with one out, Zoeller was hit by reliever Joe Trucchio, who had entered the game in the fifth. That was his last pitch as Morgan went to Clint Crosier, but he walked his first batter to load the bases.

Paul Farinacci (Sr., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura) singled to center to score both Bourquin and Zoeller and when centerfielder Reggie Watson misplayed the ball, Stephen went to third and Farinacci reached second. Fryer doubled down the right line to score Stephen and give the Buckeyes a 10-4 lead. Indiana countered the Buckeye four-spot with four runs of its own in the top of the eighth to pull within the 10-8 final score.

Caravati and Fryer each finished 3-for-4 with one home run, while Caravati scored twice and Fryer once. Bourquin was 2-for-5 and Stephen was 2-for-3, though it was the Hoosiers that led the teams in hits, 16-14. Watson was 3-for-6 and Boswell was 3-for-5 with three RBI.

Indiana jumped out of the gate with two runs in the first inning without a hit. After retiring the first two batters of the game OSU starter Trent Luyster (Sr., Flushing, Ohio/Harrison Central) hit the next to batters before walking Corby Heckman to put three on for Zach Boswell, who fired a shot into right field to score both Joe Kemp and Ryan Parker, who reached after getting plunked by Luyster.

The Buckeyes cashed in on a lead-off triple by Stephen when Farinacci sacrificed himself with a fly out to right. Stephen's first triple of the year and the fourth of his career pulled the Buckeyes within a 2-1 score.

The Hoosiers, 22-22 overall and 5-15 in the Big Ten, took a 4-1 lead in the fourth when Jay Brant knocked in two with a double to left-center field. Kurt Weigle doubled to right with one out and then with two outs, Watson singled through the right side to put runners at the corners for Brant, who sent a ball to the gap to extend the Indiana lead to three runs.

Luyster did not factor into the decision since the Buckeyes were able to tie the game after he departed when he allowed Indiana to jump out 4-1. Luyster has not factored into a decision since April 8 against Purdue. He handed over the ball to Jeffrey Carroll (So., Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) with two out in the fourth. Carroll pitched 2.1 innings and kept Indiana off the scoreboard despite five hits. He walked one and struck out one to improve to 2-0 on the year. Rory Mesiter (Fr., Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Madison), who finished the game after an inning of work by Trey Fausnaugh (So., Circleville, Ohio/Westfall), allowed only two Hoosier hits in his final two innings to pick up his second save in as many games.

Ohio State will welcome Cleveland State to Bill Davis Stadium Wednesday for a non-conference, midweek matinee in front of 3,000 sixth-graders from Columbus Public Schools. The first pitch will be at 12:05 p.m. and will be broadcast solely on the Internet at www.wosu.org.
