They made 14 Sweet 16s from 1973 through 1994 (including five F4s and 3 NCs). They have made only one Sweet 16 since 1994 - that was '02 when they made the NC game and lost to Maryland. Even though they weren't going anywhere in the tourney, they were still making it every year from '95 through '03, so their days of being a non-NCAA tourney team are relatively recent. They missed the tourney in '04, '05, '09, and '10 after making it every year from '86-'03. Mike Davis wasn't able to keep them at an NCAA tourney level every year like Knight was, but Sampson is largely to blame for their awful teams the past few years. They haven't been higher than a 4 seed in the NCAA tourney since 1993. So they were a power for about 20 years, but haven't been one for about 15 years.

So the decline started under Knight, continued under Davis, and they bottomed out after the Sampson fiasco stripped them of almost all their players. They haven't even gotten back to the Davis level yet because Crean hasn't gotten the talent he needs to put them at an NCAA tourney level.
