Impact of Big Ten's Non-Conference Games

Important? Yes. To the point where even a win over SC wouldn't matter?
No way.

USC are the glamour boys for most of the media. You win there, they'll jump on your nuts.

Utah at Michigan
Michigan State - Cal
Illinois - Mizzou

Should the Big 10 lose those three it could be much more difficult to get the Bucks to the BCS NC, win over USC or no.
If we win all our games, with the @ USC win, we will be in the NC game. Now, Big 10 OOC games will come into play if we lose 1 game. That's for sure. I could see us winning all 3 of these games. Would make a big statement to the country, although i'm sure ESPiN wouldn't even make note of it, and still complain about how bad the Big Ten is.

I think if we beat USC and run the table we're in regardless of what the rest of the Big Ten does OOC. Similarly, if we lose to USC and run the table, I think we're out regardless of what the rest of the Big Ten does OOC. That being said the Big Ten (ourselves included) definitely needs to show up OOC just to shut the rest of the country up. Bottom line though is I think we control our own destiny.

That's true unless there's an undefeated team from both the SEC and the Big 12. They are in strong conferences, and would get a late boost from their CCG victories. The SEC team would be in for sure, and then it's a beauty contest between tOSU and whichever of Oklahoma/Mizzou/Texas went 13-0. Then the conference's performance in OOC games becomes very important.

As it is in deciding between two 1-loss teams, which is more likely.

I think the Illinois Mizzou game is the key here... it would be a hit to Michigan, losing another opener to a non-BCS school, but not a shock to everyone. I think after the loss at the end of the season for Illinois, a win helps immensely with how good the Big 12 is supposed to be this year.

Not necessarily. People are already starting to back away from the USC bandwagon at a very brisk pace. Everyone thinks that their defense is going to be great, but there is a lot of doubt about their offense. If we beat USC and the rest of the B10 falls on their face, then people will say that USC was overrated and the B10 is terrible. And they might be right.

Regardless of the accuracy of the statement. A bad showing by the B10 this weekend could be the beginning of a larger snowball of negativity toward us and the conference.

Say Clemson, Mizzou or Oklahoma, and/or an SEC school all run the table. The B10 has a turd of a year, and USC loses one or more games after we beat them. I'm not sure that we get to play in the NCG.

Here's a conference stat that I haven't heard much about:

Big Ten teams with a losing record in 2007: 1 of 11

Pac Ten teams with a losing record in 2007: 5 of 10

I've also updated the thread title to keep it going during the season.
