I can get a Samsung DLP for $400..

I'm not quite sure of the model.. it's not a new one. It's between 56-60 inches (can't contact the seller right now to get the exact size and model). Comes with a very nice stand. It's a 720p, not 1080.. that's the bad thing about it.

So, those of you with experience with DLP TVs, what do you think? Should I give this some serious thought?

Not a big fan of DLP tv's at all. Picture quality isn't close to LCD or plasma. The viewing angles change. Samsung makes sweet tv's though.

DLP TVs have so-so viewing angles and so-so resolution. Really the only thing good about it is that it is the least expensive of the three, but even this has snags.
Now for the cons… where to I begin. It has the worst color accuracy of the three and will empty your pockets when it comes to your electricity bill. The power consumption of DLP TVs is a beast. The lamp or bulb that powers the TV slowly fades, therefore reducing contrast and brightness. The life is also very short, causing you to scrape out more money from you wallet to replace it. It is also the biggest and least attractive of the three. It looks similar to a bulky old-fashioned TV and doesn't get much thinner than that.

Right now, about 7 feet. If I buy it, I'm not sure.. probably further away than 7 feet. I can say that.

It looks pretty good. It's not the clearest TV, but it does look damn good for sports and games, considering it's 720. Movies look average. But for $400, seems like a great deal.

Would you consider buying a smaller lcd? This is a good site that shows comparisons with lcd/plasma. It also shows the recommended distance for size/type of tv,that i'm assuming Jwinslow was asking about.

Seriously,they have a ton of good deals over there on tv's that are worth looking into. I picked up a 37' sharp aquos online. I'm still paying on my samsung 50' plasma though :!...After purchasing a nice tv to have. It suddenly becomes more apparent how bad the other tv's throughout your house really suck.

Yup, and if you can't afford a panasonic/samsung (or select models of other brands), just wait 3, 6, 12, 24 months until you can, or they drop in price. It's a big step down to the world of Vizio, Westinghouse, etc.

Couldn't agree more...You are buying something that is supposed to be nice. It's going to cost you money regardless if it's a few hundred more or less. Like everything else there are a lot of lower end type things that sound cheap,yet don't hit your expectation levels,when it's in your possession. It's definitely worth the investment. I couldn't put a price on watching the bucks play in high definition. It's the closest thing to being in the shoe without the traffic.

I don't really need a TV. I made this thread because I thought I had a potentially great deal on my hands for a massive TV and a nice stand. Haha

If it's not such a great deal, I'll pass. TV looks really nice considering it's 720.

Really 720p is all you need right now. Not much is in 1080p yet, as far as I know.

It has taken so long to get TV to upgrade to 720p, and there are still low def only channels. It will be awhile before the next bump, and who knows if that will even be the resolution (they may jump up to 1500-2000) or even the same technology. Maybe laser tvs or flexible/3d screens will be standard then.

Either way, by the time tv needs 1080p in 3-6+ yrs, you can go out and buy a 2009 model for probably 500 (about the difference now) and have tvs.

There are always sales on dlp tvs. Go look at them in the store. Sitting in front of it - the only decent angle - it is still very inferior to the picture from a plasma or lcd. Sit on an angle, and the brightness/color plummets through the floor.

Sounds kind of like I should pass on the deal.

The room it's in, it's pretty much impossible not to be in front of the TV (little room, massive TV).
