  • WR Chad Owens is the first (and so far only) Hawaii player to be drafted. Here's what CNNSI.com says about him:

POSITIVES: Consistent receiver that stands out returning punts. Fluid releasing off the line of scrimmage, consistently finds the clearing in defense and displays a good sense of timing. Stays focused throughout the action, shows good eye/hand coordination and makes the difficult over-the-shoulder catch down the field. Possesses both soft and strong hands and has the ability to snatch the pass out of the air. Comes back to the ball and consistently makes himself an available target for the quarterback. Elusive and slippery returning punts or running after the reception.

NEGATIVES: Not a heavy-duty receiver who can take a pounding and hold onto the ball. Lacks deep speed and not beating defenders down the field. Easily brought down on initial contact.

ANALYSIS: Ultra productive in a passing offense, Owens is a feisty skill player, productive handling the ball. Projects as a fifth receiver in the NFL but must make his mark as a return specialist.

    PROJECTION: Undrafted Free Agent

I agree with everything they say about him, except their NEGATIVES comments. He's an exceptionally tough WR who has gotten up quickly many times after getting blasted...in fact, I don't ever recall seeing him getup slow after a hit and I've seen nearly every Hawaii game over the last three years. He also is NOT easily brought down on initial contact...he breaks tackles often. While agree that he doesn't have great top-end speed, he still has the ability to get open deep due to his quickness and moves. Jacksonville will be very happy with their selection of him.
