For each group, the last two games are played simultaneously, so opponents can't conspire to a mutually beneficial result by knowing the outcome of the other game.

Two teams from each group advance. A team gets 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw. The first tiebreaker is goal-differential, the next is goals scored.

Team.........Pts..Goal-Diff..Goals-Scored
Paraguay......4......+2..........3
Italy.........2.......0..........2
New Zealand...2.......0..........2
Slovakia......1......-2..........1

Italy plays Slovakia on ESPN and Paraguay plays New Zealand on ESPN2.

Paraguay advances with a win or a draw. If they lose, they need Italy to not beat Slovakia. If Slovakia and New Zealand win, Paraguay will be in a goal-differential tiebreak with Slovakia.

Italy advances with a win and goes home with a loss. If they draw, they advance if Paraguay wins. If both games are draws, whichever of Italy and NZ that scores more goals on Thursday will advance. If they score the same number of goals and both draw, a random drawing will decide who advances.

New Zealand advances with a win and goes home with a loss. If they draw, they only advance if Italy also draws and doesn't score more goals on Thursday than NZ.

Slovakia needs to win and have Paraguay win or draw, since if Paraguay loses a Slovakia win would get them in a goal-differential tiebreaker with Paraguay.

Maybe DeRossi was planning how easily he'd fall on his face the next time he got contact in the offensive half, instead of looking to see where he was passing the ball near his own goal.

Some of these Eastern European teams leave a lot to be desired in terms of offensive skill...but they can certainly play defense with the best in the world.

Seems like they'd take 1-0 or 0-0 games all day long.

So as of now (1-0 Slovakia, 0-0 NZL/PARA) we're looking at this I believe?

PARA 5pts
SLOV 4pts
NZL 3pts
ITAL 2pts

Yep, as of now...there have been some seriously boring-assed games in round 3. Lots of caution, it seems, like in round 1, at least until the end.
