GMAC Bowl jumps from December to January

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>MOBILE, Ala. -- The GMAC Bowl is moving to Sunday, Jan. 7, and will be played on the eve of the BCS national championship game, bowl officials said Friday.

The game was played on the Wednesday or Thursday before Christmas from 1999-2005.

"Our only hesitation was: Why do you mess with what has been successful?" GMAC Bowl president Jerry Silverstein said. "But to play in prime time the night before the national championship game offers more exposure for the city, the teams, the conferences, GMAC and the bowl."

The GMAC Bowl will kickoff at 7 p.m. CT and be televised nationally by ESPN.

Silverstein said ESPN has cleared the GMAC Bowl to move to January at least through 2010.

The game features teams from the Mid-American Conference and Conference USA.

Maybe the rest of the BCS games should be played January 7, also. And the BCS championship game another week later. And fill up January 1-6 with other bowls. And then move one to January 12, or something. And then move the BCS bowls again to January 14, and the championship to January 21. Eventually, there'll be college football bowl games ending just before the freshmen are supposed to report for fall practice.

Actually, I don't care if the GMAC Bowl is played after the BCS bowls. I'll be saying goodbye to college football for 8 months or so. I'd want to cram as much college football as I can in the time that I have.

It will be interesting to see if people thinks this takes away some of the glamour of the non-championship BCS Bowls. The best bowls have traditionally been the last ones played in January. But tradition means nothing compared with the potential for higher TV ratings.

What complete garbage. The GMAC Bowl that late in the season?! Honestly, I don't want to see two teams like UTEP and Arkansas square off in a bowl on the eve of the National Championship game. I mean it's football, but I'd much rather prefer watching a BCS bowl on the eve of the championship. It would get me so much more hyped for the next game.

Silly it wouldn't be UTEP v Arkansas it would be UTEP v Akron or Toledo

Oops, I didn't see who the bowl was for. I was just trying to think of some teams that were a little more than mediocre. Either way, I don't like the idea of two teams of that sort of caliber playing on January 7th, when it could easily be arranged to make two better teams play.

reppin' the MAC

Alright I'll have to speak up a little bit here as an alum of Miami U, an occasional participant in the GMAC bowl. First, the GMAC bowl has as of late produced some decent games/performances. We saw the prolific offense of Toledo put on a show last year (ha - don't get on me too much for that one). And we can't forget 3 years ago we saw Ben Roethlisberger's final college performance and live annoucement that he was going pro (although if you weren't interested in Miami you probably weren't watching the game and didnt know who Roethlisberger was). But none the less, we've seen some good performances. Ben growing up at Miami, up and coming Toledo teams, Akron teams that produce the likes of Charlie Frye every decade or so....I think they offer a decent bowl game to watch, better than a lot of the other typically-before-Xmas bowl games. Might as well put it later on when nothing else is going on to keep us busy while we wait for the big NC game. Hey, we're all going to be in Arizona that time of the year this year anyways so who cares what is on TV that night!

Well, then don't watch it. Problem solved. I guess I'm the only person on the planet that doesn't mind there being so many bowl games. I watch just about everyone I can. If I don't like the game then I don't watch it.

I don't have anything about the MAC or any other bowls. I like football and I watch as much as I can. I think the MAC is much under-rated, although it is not the Big Ten by a long shot. I also would like to watch two evenly matched mid-majors go after it than a lopsided scorefest in which one team doesn't have a chance.

The issue to me is one of honor. The last bowl games are supposed to be the best ones and the BCS bowls are supposed to be the best bowls and players slug their hearts out to get there.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but the GMAC Bowl doesn't belong in that week.

I will be very surprised if the game actually does get very good ratings.

Agreed. I see it getting ratings similar to what it has gotten the last few years.Maybe slightly higher, but nowhere close to a BCS caliber game. Personally, I don't care if a game is Dec 23 or Jan 7. If I want to see the teams in the game play, I will watch, otherwise, I won't.

First we have to look at the positive here...

The BCS title game is now one week later then normal! Next we can sneak another week in there and viola! No excuse of the season being to long for a playoff. Give the bowls to the lesser teams and the next three weeks are played in a 8 team playoff...

Jan 1 - 8 teams
Jan 8 - 4 teams
Jan 15- champ game!!!!

One less leg for the NCS to stand on.

Next is not such a big thing but to me it is, its one week less i dont have to go without a college footbal game....

That is all
