James Mitchell (Jim) Cleamons (born September 13, 1949 in Lincolnton, North Carolina) is a retired American professional basketball player and current assistant coach. He has been an assistant under head coach Phil Jackson with both the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers. He played collegiately at The Ohio State University, and was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers with the 13th pick of the 1971 NBA Draft. He had a nine-year NBA career for four different teams (the Lakers, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the New York Knicks, and the Washington Bullets). In 1976, Cleamons was selected to the NBA All-Defense 2nd team.

In addition to his playing career, Cleamons was the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks for slightly over one year, from 1996 to 1997. Cleamons was an assistant coach for the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets. He was hired as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers on July 19, 2006.

For a few games during his tenure with the Lakers, he has served as acting head coach while Phil Jackson was absent.

Former Ohio State star Jim Cleamons, a Los Angeles Lakers assistant, was named by the Los Angeles Times as a possible replacement for former Southern California coach Tim Floyd, who resigned suddenly this week.

Cleamons, a Linden graduate, has been a head coach before, with the Dallas Mavericks and at Youngstown State. Cleamons and fellow Lakers assistant Brian Shaw might be attractive to USC athletic director Mike Garrett if the Lakers win the NBA title.

Lakers Q&A: Jim Cleamons expresses interest in coaching at collegiate level
January 6, 2011

This is the first post of an occasional series that features a Q&A with a member of the Lakers organization. Below is the transcript of a recent conversation with Lakers assistant coach Jim Cleamons, who's in charge of game preparations for contests against Cleveland, Dallas, Houston, New Jersey, New Orleans and Oklahoma City.

Phil [Jackson] remarked at the beginning of training camp that with his expectation that this would be his last season, his hope would be that one of his assistants would be considered to replace him. Would that possibility interest you?

I would be flattered, but I'm at the age where I've got my own bucket list. In all honesty, my bucket list does not include being the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers.

What's on your bucket list?

I would like to become a head coach in a nice college environment. I want to go back to where I started. I want to pass on the knowledge I have as a player or coach to the next generation. I want to teach them a way to play. I'm not saying I have the penicillin cure for all, but I've been blessed to be around some outstanding coaches and teachers. I know a system that works incredibly well. I want to leave that with the next generation to follow. A collegiate setting is what I'm looking for.

Lincolnton native leaves NBA for foreign head coaching job
July 03, 2011
Richard Walker

Lincolnton native Jim Cleamons has been hired head coach of the Zhejiang Guangsha of the Chinese Basketball Association.

A longtime assistant under head coach Phil Jackson for both the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers and former Dallas Mavericks head coach, Cleamons leaves the Lakers after being that team's longest tenured coach on the current staff at six seasons.

Cleamons, 62, was born in Lincolnton before moving to Ohio where he emerged as a basketball standout who eventually played at Ohio State and in the NBA with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Report: Jim Cleamons interested in joining Knicks

The stars are starting to align for an eventual reunion of Phil Jackson and Jim Cleamons in New York. Cleamons, the former Knicks starting point guard, and Jackson were teammates in New York in the late 1970's. From there, Cleamons became Jackson's right-hand man on the bench for nine of the Zen Master's 11 coaching titles -- four with the Bulls and all five with the Lakers. Cleamons, now a Bucks assistant coach, would seem a perfect fit as top assistant -- a veteran and master of the triangle who could help potential new head coach Steve Kerr. Kerr has emerged as Jackson's leading head-coaching candidate. According to an NBA source, Cleamons is interested in rejoining Jackson's Knicks in any capacity. Already, former Bulls personnel man, Clarence Gaines Jr. is on board with the Knicks in an unnamed front-office job and was in Portsmouth, Va. with team brass this week for the second day of an important pre-draft camp.
