Ohio State and Texas drew a lot of attention last fall by doing one thing: playing each other in a college football game.
It's become increasingly rare to see big-time powers match up in non-conference and non-rival play. especially programs that don't have much history together.
Teams would rather use the increasingly small non-conference window to pay a smaller program to visit, see the big-time, get whooped, and take home some money.
Ohio State does have its share of pastry coming to Columbus, but the OSU coach isn't backing down. The Buckeyes and their button-down coach will stroll on into Austin this fall to finish the contract with Texas.
And after that?
"We have one year we're at Washington to finish up a home-and-home from '03," said Tressel, the guest speaker last week at the Macon Touchdown Club's year-end jamboree. "We pick up USC for two years home and home, and then we pick up Miami."
Of Florida, not Ohio.
The NCAA resumes a 12-game schedule in 2006, and major programs can take the money or go for the attention.
Tressel's on the attention side of the fence.
"We think that you want to be on the national scene one game a year," he said. "With 12 games, it'll be easier."
And unlike the new opponents for some teams, it's no reach to expect Southern Cal and Miami to remain in the upper echelon. Colorado, one of Georgia's 2006 opponents, hasn't been a major player in awhile, and Louisville jumping on board down the road won't inspire need for more hotels in Athens.
But Georgia has so much debt, it might consider a bit more often the big-money big game.
"We have 36 sports," Tressel said of the OSU program. "The Bulldogs probably have 20, Georgia Tech 20 or 22. We have 36. I understand the economics of the 12th game."
I think the word he's looking for is "cha-ching."

I'm looking at the first post and only counting 10 games for 06. Isn't this the opening of 12 games scheduling?
And since when did OSU duck games against big programs? They've regularly had home and home series with Washington, Stanford, Cal and Oregon in the past, an attempt to give West Coast Alums a look at the bucks. Oklahoma and LSU. aTm... I know they've been here a couple of times but not sure we ever went there... Mizzou, Pitt, WVa... in fact I think we played WVa there and they didn't come to Columbus...
Texas broke no precedent aside from the fact that the game was not scheduled ten years out and the two programs had not met. Had they lost the Rose Bowl game to Michigan... as they easily could have... I don't think the game would have had quite as much impact.
Finally, given the scathing things said about Oregon beating a 1-aa school (or whatever the hell they call schools playing in stadiums that hold less than 35,000) I sure as hell hope we don't play YSU as the article seems to imply. Schedule Army, Air Force, or Navy... play Northwestern twice, give Indiana an extra home date in September, fly to Mormon land in August or to Hawaii in December, but please, don't make that slide to YSU level.

A) The grief we might take for playing a 1-AA school will be more than overcome by playing a heavyweight OOC team every year whereas many other big schools will not.
B) Everybodys going to have at least one game with Creampuff U as a result of the 12 game schedule. You simply cannot ignore the financial implications of an extra home game for the big time schools. The fact that there is now no rule in place to discourage playing 1AA teams makes their scheduling across the board an almost certainty.

I honestly do not like the idea of playing YSU.
You can't tell me that there isnt a d-I team that wants to schedule us.
They really need to make a rule that if you are in D-I you cannot schedule d-I teams.
And as for Miami(OH) someone needs to tell them that to be on top you have to beat some top programs, and Syracuse doesnt count.

Actually, a separate SOS BCS component was removed because SOS is an important element of the power ratings already. The perfect example of the inaccuracy of your argument can be provided by followers of a certain university in Oregon who found themselves out of a BCS bowl this year precisely because of the effect of SOS on computer ratings!

YSU will be DI by the time we play them, iirc
With this new I-AA rule, now SEC teams can play 3 I-AA teams every year

WSU/tOSU cancelled?
Well shit!!! I've been looking forward to that matchup eversince that '02 game in Columbus. No point in speculating why the Buckeyes backed out...it's just damn disappointing! I would have liked to have the Cougs finally play the Bucks outside of the Shoe. Oh well, I see WSU has gotten some other Big 10 teams to play them (perhaps more winnable games for WSU), that is some consolation.

If you're referring to YSU, the game will indeed happen in 2008 (it has been being worked for over a year now). The question is will YSU be I-A by then. Tressel has stated he'll play YSU regardless if they are I-AA or I-A.
YSU is working on moving up to I-A, but it's not a guarantee they make the move by 2008. As for SEC teams playing multiple I-AA teams in a season, I believe only one per year counts instead of the one per every four seasons.
