When it comes to recruiting high school football players, make no mistake, Broward and Palm Beach counties have become areas where colleges are looking first.

In the past, these are two areas that college coaches would wait until late in the season to explore, but now, Glades Central, St. Thomas Aquinas, Boyd Anderson, Royal Palm Beach, Chaminade-Madonna, Pahokee and some 70 other schools are getting daily text messages and calls, as well as personal visits.

During the first half of the season, it wasn't unusual to see a coach from Miami, Rutgers, Mississippi State, Tennessee or Pittsburgh heading toward the coaches offices at Everglades, Atlantic, Dwyer or Coconut Creek.

Look on any list that college coaches have, and it's a sure bet that there will be names of athletes from Broward and Palm Beach near or at the top.

The Palm Beach area is one of the top four places in the state for talent. Not just in this upcoming class, but also the classes of 2008 and 2009, where juniors and sophomores have been making a solid impact.

I talk with some 20 major colleges a week, and schools such as Hollywood Hills, Palm Beach Gardens, West Boca and Deerfield Beach are mentioned frequently.

Take a look at any position in the two-county area and you will find senior football talent that can match up with any in the state. At quarterback, St. Thomas standout Wesley Carroll and South Broward emerging star Octavious Hawkins are both Division I-A material. So is Bryan Mann of Glades Central.

Running backs such as Chaminade-Madonna's Xavier Stinson, Brandon Pendergrass of Royal Palm Beach and Joe Jones of South Broward have colleges looking at their every move. Stinson orally committed to Pittsburgh and Pendergrass to Wake Forest.

Receivers in the region include Glades Central's Deonte Thompson and Tarus McKinley, Leonard Hankerson (St. Thomas), D'Angelo Harden (Dillard), Darian Williams (Northeast) and Will Brown (Dwyer).

This is also the year of the tight end with Anthony Middleton (Monarch), Nick Provo (Leonard), A.J. Johnson (Cardinal Gibbons) and Mike McGowan (West Boca).

Offensive line stars include Kevin Bryant and Branden Curry from Boyd Anderson, Ernest McCoy and Jatavious Jackson of Glades Central, Tyler McDermott of Palm Beach Central and Chaminade-Madonna standouts Emeka Nwanko and Ed Ferguson.

Defensively, Jasper Grimes of Dwyer is one of the best linemen around. Donte'e Nichols of Ely and Tywon Martin from Douglas are also quality talents along with ends Patrick Grant (Boyd Anderson), Jabaal Sheard (Hollywood Hills) and Rutgers commit Justin Francis of Miramar.

One of the state's best linebackers, Josh Bynes (Boyd Anderson), has had a big year. So have Josh Hartigan (Northeast) and Minnesota oral commit Ronnie St. Fluer (Hollywood Hills).

If you want to see some top talent in our own backyard, the secondary is the place to be. Akeem Auguste, Kamar Aiken and Eian Smith (Chaminade-Madonna), Miami oral commit Damien Berry and Auburn commit Johnny Lee Dixon (Glades Central), Moses Jenkins (Boyd Anderson), Charlton Williams (Coral Glades), David Lewis (Deerfield Beach) and the gifted Major Wright (St. Thomas) are all elite players.

ON THE RECRUITING TRAIL

Everglades defensive lineman Uriah Grant (6 feet 1, 245) has several solid offers. Wisconsin was on him early. Then, Indiana, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Michigan State and South Carolina came aboard. ...

Northeast offensive backfield mates Jim Maitland (6-1, 235) and Bo Williams (6-0, 205) have been busy with schools making solid offers. Maitland is looking at Pittsburgh, North Carolina State and Colorado State. So far, Williams has offers from West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Louisville, N.C. State, Nebraska, Florida and Florida State. ...

One of the real surprises this season has been West Boca defensive lineman A.J. Ganguzza. I watched this 6-3, 265-pound athlete last year at Pope John Paul II and followed his progress during the summer at several camps and combines. North Carolina, Syracuse, Northwestern and Central Florida have all kept an eye out. So have FAU and FIU. ...

AREA oral COMMITMENTS

Auburn: Charles Byrum, PK, 6-1, 190, St. Thomas Aquinas, Johnny Lee Dixon, DB, 5-11, 176, Glades Central. Indiana: Zach Walker, RB, 5-8, 175, Plantation. Miami: Damien Berry, DB, 6-0, 170, Glades Central. Minnesota: Ronnie St. Fluer, LB, 6-1, 225, Hollywood Hills. Pittsburgh: Buddy Jackson, DB, 6-1, 160, Cypress Bay, Nick Krupa, TE/DE, 6-4, 225, Santaluces, Xavier Stinson, RB, 5-9, 220, Chaminade-Madonna. Rutgers: Justin Francis, DE, 6-4, 245, Miramar. Syracuse: Nick Provo, TE, 6-3, 225, John I. Leonard. UCF: Blake Clingan, P, 6-3, 215, Coral Springs, A.J. Johnson, TE, 6-4, 225, Cardinal Gibbons. Wake Forest: Brandon Pendergrass, RB, 5-9, 185, Royal Palm Beach.

As spring football practice winds down, the Class of 2008 has stepped into the spotlight of college recruiters.

Broward and Palm Beach counties again have some of the best talent in the state.

We get mentioned as being in the mix for at least 2 of their top twenty. Back when Miami was great, they recruited the snot out of Broward, Palm
and Dade counties. It appears several of the kids mentioned are headed
off to the "U".

To the best of my knowledge, we aren't actively recruiting anyone from the area outside of Shaw...Johnson had an offer but is committed to Miami, Anderson won't get an offer and Blackwell is still waiting on his first offer and won't be getting one from OSU because he doesn't share a last name with a DL-friendly Cubs pitcher...

Linebackers going strong

Bill Buchalter |
Special to the Sentinel July 21, 2007

A year ago, 18 Florida linebackers signed scholarships with Bowl Championship Series teams. Thirty-three signed with NCAA Division I-A programs.

Surprisingly, 14 already have committed to BCS programs this year and we're still weeks away from the official start of late summer football practice.

Half of the 14 have commited to Miami and Florida State.

I live in Florida and those schools you mentioned always compete for the state championship. Most of them won't leave the state after they are out of high school.I'm sorry to say but when you have 3 powerhouse schools in state it can be really hard persuading them to leave.

No doubt, but if you've followed recruiting at all, you understand that there is always a few kids who leave state by choice or are overlooked by the in-state program.

James Scott, Zebrie Sanders, Brandon Moore, Brian Rolle....national prospects who either chose to leave and spurn the in-state schools or never received the offers in-state.

Brian Rolle left because he commited to tOSU before the gators even offered him.Luckily for us he's a good guy that stuck to his commitment when the gators did finally offer him.I followed the Immokalee program very closely. Those are the recruits who look at life beyond Florida. There is very very few of them.

Ohio State has gotten a few players out of the area who were overlooked by the other major schools. I'm pretty sure gamble was from Ely and I knoew we got a couple others from the area.
