A University of Florida walk-on football player was one of two people killed in an overnight crash at Old Archer Road and SW 23rd Terrace early Friday, Gainesville Police reported.

Michael Guilford, a walk-on football player was one of two people killed.

Michael W. Guilford, 19, and Ashley E. Slonina, 20, died in the wreck, said police spokesman Lt. Keith Kameg. Guilford and Slonina had been riding on a motorcycle when they hit a median at SW 23rd Terrace and Old Archer Road.
Guilford, who is from Quincy and attended Blountstown High School, is listed as redshirt freshman with the Gators. His position is defensive back.

My thoughts and prayers also go out to their families, friends, and teammates. It's been a pretty bad day down here in Gainesville today. There were also two other pretty horrific accidents on I-75 today in which at least one other life was lost.

A shame. Preventable too, just a little common sense about not flying over the speed limit; he and his friend would be seeing more victories for their team.

May this be a lesson to all kids who jump on a bike and try dangerous stuff.

Florida Walk-On Player Killed In Motorcycle Accident

CSTV

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - A walk-on defensive back for the Florida Gators was killed early Friday when the motorcycle he was driving hit a median at a high rate of speed, police said.

Michael Guilford, a 19-year-old redshirt freshman from Quincy, was not wearing a helmet. Neither was passenger Ashley Slonina, a Florida junior from Lynn Haven who also died in the crash.

Damn that sucks

Guilford also mimicked Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith during preparation for the Bowl Championship Series national title game in January.

Why would they include this?

Because there is not that much press on a walk-on scout team guy, and there was an article in January about "Sunshine" being the Troy Smith guy on the scout team. Nothing more than the press making a frantic attempt to get out a story by a deadline with what they have.

Nah, Gatorubet, because they are morons who respect themselves even less than they respect others. Walk-on or not, it is unfortunate when anyone dies at such a young age.

Our sympathies to both families.

sheesh, it wasn't a sleight at the bucks. as gatorubet stated, there wasn't much press on the guy. all i remember about him is what i saw in the look-a-like threads and that he "played" troy in practice. i'm sure all cstv had to go on at the time was that he, again, played troy in practice. give the guy credit. judging by how their defense faired against troy and his offense, guilford probably did a helluva job.

Not sure what you mean Buckguy, but I certainly didn't have any problem with what our Gator fan said. In fact, I thought he was being too much of a gentleman. I just think When you are writing something about a kid who died, you can take a minute to make sure you don't use a word like "mimicked" that has a double meaning.

I drove through Gainesville Friday on my way to Englewood. We were backed up for a good hour. The truck crash looked awful. They were in the cleanup stage by then but there was bent and charred bits of guard rail and truck all over the place.
