Florida Man Cancels Nissan GT-R Order

A Florida man named Scott Weires has canceled the order for his long-awaited Nissan GT-R. Why? It's not that he was disappointed in the car's performance credentials, far from it. The problem is that the GT-R is equipped with a 'black box', similar in theory to the kind found on airplanes to help determine what went wrong in case of an accident or breakdown. By the end of 2012, car buyers won't have a choice as to whether their new car is equipped with a 'black box,' or Electronic Data Recorder -- they will be federally mandated to carry one. These devices track information that could be useful to the manufacturer in determining exactly what is, or has been, going on with a car. There are a few worries, though, that warranty claims could be denied if the automaker, Nissan in this case, deems that the car was being raced or abused in some way or by police or lawyers to determine culpability. Nissan's GT-R carries an on-board recorder that keeps track of the past few day's worth of driving and cannot be disabled. In the case of Scott Weires, an attorney no less, that was enough to look elsewhere. Would it be for you?

NASHVILLE, Tennessee — Nissan hiked the price today for its 2009 GT-R supercar, increasing the MSRP to $76,480 for the base car and $79,090 for the GT-R Premium. Originally priced at $69,850, the change reflects an increase of 10 percent.

Yes. But I usually don't buy brand new cars anyway.....

And it can't be disabled? Right, uh huh sure thing....someone will figure out a way....
Right you are. No one can steal your identity or hack into Department of Defense computers -- just can't be done. No way.

In Japan, this thing uses its GPS to figure out if you're on a racetrack or not. If you are, it will turn off its limiter (set to 112 mph by Japanese law). However, it will also send a message to Nissan requiring you to get a post-race tune-up, with the penalty of having your warranty voided for not doing so.

So things could be worse. Either way, if a little black box is holding you back from buying one of THE best sports cars to come out in a while you should have your head checked. This thing beat a Porsche 911 Turbo on the Nurburgring, a car twice as expensive as the GT-R. On the Top Gear test track, this thing beat out a Murcielago, a Ferrari 430, Ferrari 360, Ford GT, and Corvette Z06 to name a few. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gear_Test_Track#The_Power_Board

Yeah, but it has a black box in it.

If you're worried about the warranty on this piece you can't afford it.

you say that until your having some fun with your new civic and hit 100mph. a message is immediately sent to honda and your warranty is voided, your insurance company ups your rates, and the police are notified.

while im sure we are a long way away from this its where things are going. alot of insurance companies in this area routinely go to drag strips and keep records of what vin #'s show up. if you show up with a car they cover they drop you.

oh and im certain someone will figure out how to shut it off. which will immediately void your warranty and your insurance will drop you. yay!

alot of sports cars have had less advanced setups for years now.

New Car

This will tell you that I am not quite "with it" or not quite "there".

For that kind of money, I would prefer a vintage Corvette, Camaro, Mustang, Charger or my first car bought third hand many years later, which was a 1960 Chevrolet Impala convertible.

I would take the rest and go to Hawaii and Las Vegas on the way home.

Florida Man cancels GTR order?

That's gotta happen once every thousand blue moons! What's next? Tampa woman decides to keep clothes on?
Miami Cuban immigrants decide white powder sales detrimental to society?
Neighborhood developer decides golf course "probably unnecessary" ?
