ESPN's Indispensable Players

Thought it was an interesting idea that could spark some discussion to kill the last week until real football starts. Was thinking professional only, but might as well throw college teams in as well.

Which player on your team holds highest priority? If you lose this guy, you see a huge drop-off in the team's performance.

For Ohio State, I think it's pretty clear. It's TP. I think we're deep enough at the other "skill" positions to make up for an injury, but TP brings too much to the table to replace. Even on defense, if we lose Cam or Homan, I'm confident that a backup could come in and we'd still have a very good defense. There'd be a drop off, but it wouldn't kill the season.

For the Niners, Frank Gore. I want to say Patrick Willis, but the defense is pretty deep and would be solid even without him. Willis makes them much better, but Frank Gore IS the offense. Alex Smith is still unproven, and probably always will be. And the loss of Glen Coffee makes Gore even more important. The 49ers are a run-first team. If Gore goes down... long season.

If Alex Smith takes a step forward and shows he can play well when the game is on the line, the answer is Willis.
