ESPN draws huge ratings for USC-Ohio State

Despite the number of comments we got on our Serena Williams foot-fault post, most viewers apparently were tuned in for college football Saturday night.

The Southern Cal-Ohio State game on ESPN drew a 7.3 rating, the highest-rated program of the night and the most-viewed college football game ever for the network ? including bowl games.

ESPN reported that the game averaged 7.24 million households and 10.57 million viewers, passing the 6.33 million HH and 8.41 million viewers for a 2006 Miami (Fla.)-Florida State game on Labor Day.

The 7.3 rating was the network?s biggest college football rating since a 7.7 for a Miami-Florida State game in 1994, when there were fewer TV households (and thus fewer potential viewers).

Most viewed game ever, and it showed a kick ass Buckeye defense, the unquestioned competitiveness of tOSU versus an unquestioned elite national power (more accurately between two elite national powers) and the awesomeness of the atmosphere of a sold out Shoe. Kudos.

I think this loss is a blessing in disguise, but it depends a lot on how the team responds and plays throughout the rest of the season.

No doubt - I think most of us would be pretty satisfied if this ends up being our only game in the 'L' column this season. We've got a long way to go though...

I agree we do. That's why, as shitty as this loss is, I think it can help the team more in the long run by giving them a chance to face adversity, rebound and come together, and continue to gain experience and develop outside the spotlight. I don't think this team, right now, is of NC caliber; at least not against teams like UTex or UF offensively. The defense looks great, the offense needs to work things out, and I don't know if that would happen as well if this team were suddenly in the top 3, with a lot of focus on them. I would hate for them to have beat USC at home, then lose the next week, i.e. SC 2008.

If the nation saw what I saw, that OSU simply out played USC for 58 minutes, it bodes well for recruiting.

I wonder if ABC/ESPN wish that they had switched OSU/USC and NASCAR? Note to networks OSU football = ratings.
