Eastern Illinois Panthers (0-3) at Ohio State Buckeyes (2-0)

BOTTOM LINE: Eastern Illinois heads into the matchup with Ohio State after losing three games in a row.

Ohio State went 13-3 at home last season while going 20-12 overall. The Buckeyes shot 47.1% from the field and 36.5% from 3-point range last season.

Eastern Illinois finished 5-26 overall with a 1-16 record on the road a season ago. The Panthers averaged 56.3 points per game while shooting 39.8% from the field and 32.6% from deep last season.

One of Eastern's losses was 87-57 at Illinois. Hopefully, the Bucks will have a similarly easy time of it.

Hard to believe EIU produced two starting NFL QB's in recent years, Jimmy Garoppolo and Tony Romo.

Chris Holtmann wasn't happy with Ohio State's effort in practice on Sunday.

The Buckeye head coach said he made that clear to his team over the weekend, and it responded with better play on Monday. Eastern Illinois may rank 354th in the country, per KenPom, but Holtmann said closer-than-anticipated matchups with mid-majors happen with a lot more regularity than his players and some fans and media members might realize.

"I'm certain our guys understand we have a lot to prove, and tomorrow's another opportunity," Holtmann said Tuesday at a press conference at the Schottenstein Center.

Ohio State has one more warmup on the docket before heading to Maui for a true test next week.

After dominant wins over Robert Morris and Charleston Southern to open the 2022-23 season, the Buckeyes host an 0-3 Eastern Illinois team at 7 p.m. at the Schottenstein Center Wednesday. Ohio State has the 345th-ranked strength of schedule in the country through two games, per KenPom, and Wednesday's contest won’t help boost that figure. The Panthers are sitting at No. 354 in KenPom’s adjusted efficiency margin, which makes them one of the 10 worst teams in the country.

But during a season in which teams like Syracuse, Louisville and TCU have all dropped buy games against mid-majors, Chris Holtmann has made it a point to emphasize that every game must be taken seriously.

“Getting ready, obviously, for our next game versus Eastern Illinois. Had a chance to watch them quite a bit. They play some common opponents,” Holtmann said Tuesday. “They played really well in their opener versus Illinois, it was competitive for most of the game. Got a really tough, defensive-minded group and particularly in the backcourt. They turn people over at a really high rate, which is – as we mentioned after last game – is something we continue to work on with this group. So looking forward to tomorrow night.”
