After allowing nose tackle Domata Peko to walk during free agency, the Denver Broncos selected versatile Ohio State defensive tackle/defensive end Dre’Mont Jones in the third round of this year’s NFL draft.
Jones isn’t a true nose tackle but he’s been practicing lining up in front of offensive tackles, inside offensive tackles and even right over the center – the position of a traditional nose tackle.
The Broncos will likely move Jones around on game days and he will be asked to help generate an interior pass rush. He’s up to the task.
“I’m very confident in my ability to pass rush,” Jones said on May 11. “I think I can make an early impact. I do what I do at a high level, and hopefully I can just continue to get better because the vets haven’t come in yet. I haven’t gotten the feel yet to really rush against an NFL pro yet. Once I get that down, I think I’ll be alright.”
Jones had a breakout year with the Buckeyes as a junior in 2018, totaling 43 tackles, 8.5 sacks, one interception and one forced fumble. Denver won’t expect that kind of production right away from Jones but it’s a sign of the kind of numbers the defensive lineman can produce.
Jones might just manage to win a starting job sooner than later.
