Got into it with the 6-6 255 pound Dolphin linebacker Jason Taylor.

He is now facing hate crime charges.

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) -- The man charged with assaulting Miami Dolphins linebacker Jason Taylor faces hate crime charges, police said Monday.
Redmond Charles Burns, 24, allegedly used racial epithets and yelled obscenities at Taylor, who is black, during an alleged highway confrontation Sunday night. Taylor told police that Burns grabbed his shirt, ripping it in several places, and suffered a "minor laceration" on a forearm from a metal object Burns allegedly used to attack him.
Taylor, who played in a charity golf tournament Monday in Tampa, said in a statement issued by the Dolphins that his injury was minor.
"My wife and I were the victims in an unfortunate incident last night, but we are both fine," Taylor said.
Burns, who is white, faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, which police have also classified as a hate crime that would permit tougher penalties. Burns also is charged with obstruction for allegedly resisting arrest after Taylor identified him from a photo array.

Burns was being held Monday on $10,600 bond at the Broward County jail. It wasn't immediately clear Monday if he had a lawyer to represent him.
Taylor, 31, has played nine seasons with the Dolphins and emerged as one of the team's best defensive players. Last season Taylor had 12 quarterback sacks among his 52 tackles. For his career, Taylor has 540 tackles and 92 1/2 sacks.
According to Davie police, Taylor and his wife, Katina, were on their way home from church Sunday evening when Taylor saw a red pickup truck backing up at an intersection in the path of his car. Katina Taylor is the sister of Zach Thomas, another starting Dolphins linebacker.
As Taylor attempted to pass, the driver of the pickup "intentionally swerved directly at Taylor" and caused him to run off the road.
The passenger in the truck, who wasn't charged, allegedly got out and started to bang on the hood of Taylor's trunk. The 6-foot-6, 255-pound Taylor then got out of his car and was confronted by the 5-foot-11, 168-pound Burns, who was allegedly yelling racial insults and threatening to kill Taylor, according to a police report.
After grabbing Taylor's shirt, Burns allegedly went back to his truck, got an "unknown metal object" and tried to stab Taylor with it. Taylor suffered a minor wound to his left forearm but declined medical treatment.
Both men then jumped back in the truck and took off, with Taylor following and dialing 911. He lost the truck in a trailer park but was able to identify Burns from a photo lineup that police provided.
Taylor has a home in Davie, which is also the location of the Dolphins' training facility.

There is an earlier report detailing the chase and arrest --

The incident occurred Sunday night on his way home from church with his wife, Jason Taylor Foundation spokesman Seth Levit told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, which first reported the story on its website Monday morning ...

According to the police report, Taylor observed a red Ford pickup truck backing across the intersection of State Route 84 and Flamingo Road eastbound in the westbound lanes, coming directly at his car. Taylor then beeped his horn, and both vehicles proceeded southbound on Flamingo Road before turning west on Southwest 8th Street.
With Burns traveling at just 10 miles per hour, Taylor attempted to pass him, but Burns intentionally swerved his pickup truck toward Taylor's car, causing it to run off the road. After both vehicles stopped, an unidentified passenger got out of the truck and banged on Taylor's trunk, and Taylor exited his car. Burns repeatedly shouted a racial obscenity at the Dolphin and threatened to kill him, then grabbed and ripped Taylor's shirt in several places.
Burns then grabbed an unknown metal object from the inside of his truck and attempted to stab Taylor with it. Taylor then backed away but was grazed, causing a minor laceration on his forearm. Burns and his passenger fled in the truck and Taylor followed, calling 911 before losing the pickup in a trailer park. Police detectives later went to Taylor's home and handed him a photo lineup of six subjects, and Taylor identified Burns immediately. The police then attempted to bring Burns into custody, but he began kicking and punching when the detectives tried to handcuff him. Burns eventually was handcuffed but attempted to kick out the back window of the police car before being subdued with pepper spray. He was booked with charges of resisting arrest, both with and without violence, as well as aggravated battery.

Feisty lttle fucker isn't he.

And it just would have to be a trailer park where he went to ground.

"He lost the truck in a trailer park..."
:slappy:

Jason: Which one of these beat up old red trucks were we following?

Katina: It's the one with the skinny bald white guy driving it.

Jason: Ummmm... do you remember the license plate?

Fark anyone?

Isnt jason taylor white or at least 75 percent white. You would think that if this redneck wanted to commit a hate crime he would have did it to someone who is purely african american.

Given that Taylor outweighs this guy by almost a hundred pounds, I don't think choosing the right victim is this man's specialty.

You see this as a stretch? I don't think he said it repeatedly as a term of endearment

I'm not at all saying the guy wasn't racist in this incident...he clearly was. My point is, does this usage of racial slurs automatically classify this as a "hate crime"? I could, in theory, go out and beat someone of a race other than mine solely because I don't like someone of that race, but if I don't use a racial slur I won't have the "hate crime" tag and its associated elevated punishment attached to the crime. However, if I get into a confrontation with the same person, and use a slur out of pure anger in the heat of the moment, I'll have "hate crime" tacked on. Is that right?

The "hate crime" statute was intended to discourage crimes committed solely because of a hatred of another race or sexual preference. I don't think it intended to increase punishment for the spontaneous utterance of derogatory terms.

Not to be a dick, but isn't Jaason Taylor a defensive end and not a linebacker?

Either way, it took a lot of restraint on his part not to kill this moron. From all accounts, Taylor is one of the league's real "nice guys".

Thats what I was thinking to, and isn't his brother in law Zach Thomas?

Anyway, the fact that he utter racial slurs, should indeed make this a hate crime. Hopefully they throw the book at this guy and kudos to Taylor for calling the police and just following him rather than beating the living crap out of him right in the street.

So exactly when would it be considered a hate crime then in your opinion? Your arguement makes no sense unless you think the only way it can be a hate crime is when a bunch of guys put on white sheets and go burn down the local black church, or maybe it's okay to do that to because you don't think blacks should be allowed to have their own church. So where is the line?

I tend to agree with Mili. While I think the guy in question is with out a doubt a moron and could very well be a racist, it seems to me that hate criimes must have some sort of calculated intent. Or at least be able to prove that this was racially motivated. It seems pretty clear that this ass clown only wanted to kill jason taylor for getting in his way. The fact that he was yelling racial slurs seem to be just an extension of the road rage. It just doesn't seem like this guy was sitting on the side of the road thinking, "man i can't wait for some n****r to come on over so i can kill me the shit outa him"

if they can prove that somehow he was thinking that (or something like that) then by all means charge him with a hate crime.
