Optimism Lover
I'm starting this thread for a couple of reasons.

A: I'm looking to get a dog in the next few months. Right now, I'm leaning towards a greyhound, or a miniature dachsund. I know these are like polar opposites, but I've always wanted a greyhound & my ex-girlfriend had two dachsunds who were amazing & hilarious. Does anyone know any breeders of either of these 2 fine canines? If so, I would greatly appreciate a contact. Secondly, does anyone have any personal experiences with greyhounds? I'm looking to know a little more about them before I pull the trigger on such a high maintenance dog. Any info or advice would be tremendously appreciated.

B: Just for fun, do you have dogs & if so, what kind are they and what are their names? The closest thing I have are those 2 wild weiner dogs of my ex-girlfriend's, and their names are Dante & Roxy. They're NUTS.

Actually I just got a long haired mini dachsund back in Sept of 2004. His name is Jackson Browne (he's brown if you didn't guess), and he is a cool little dog. Dachsunds can be a bit stubborn, and they do like to bark a lot. Other than that they are a very friendly dog, and love to just chill beside you on the couch. Just be careful not to feed them too much, they can become overweight very easily which will lead to back problems.

I have owned both a greyhound and a minature daschund. Both are very good dogs. The greyhound is very smart. It seems to relate better with people than other dogs. It is somewhat high strung, from my experience and seems to need alot of attention.

While neither are my favorite breed (Boxer, Doberman), if I had to choose between the two, I would pick the min. daschund.

I figure you would have experience with Blue Tick Hounds.

Trying to resist the urge to make a redneck joke here. It isn't going to work.

"High strung," so did you have to take it to dinner and a movie first?

Whew I feel better.

I will never own a dog. I hate going to peoples houses that own dogs because the whole place stinks like dog. People who live with dogs can't smell this, but I can. I just wish I had told my gf that I was allergic to them so that she knew that we would never have one. I told her that if she ever did come home with a dog when we are married it will run away. I think she is clear on the point that dogs are a deal breaker.

AMEN hawg!!

That's why my wife and I are anti-pet.

The worst is when you go to someone's house and the dog barks at you all night and all they do is yell at the dog all night to stop.

That happened to me when we went to some friends of my wifes to watch this years Alamo Bowl. They had a Rottweiler.

I told my wife I'm never going to their house again as long as they have a dog.

People don't like being licked, sniffed, and barked at all night.

My aunt and uncle have 2 Rots, but they stay outside most of the time. They aren't allowed out of the kitchen anyway so they don't get in the way too much. My gf's parents have 2 dogs that love to lick so I have to wash my hands every time they come near me. I don't hate dogs, I just hate putting up with all the stuff dogs like to do (i.e. barking, licking, crapping, etc).

I have two terriers, a West Highland and a Carin... I live in a row house, so had to be small dogs for us. I will say they have the best personalities I have ever seen from any dog.

Hawg... have you noticed the thread is called Dog Owners?

Not "People who will never be Dog Owners because they are assholes and have nothing better to do than bad mouth having pets"

Just wanted to point that out... so shut the fuck up. CB6's dog ain't crappin in your bedroom. :wink2:

Anyway.. I have a Shih Tzu... and he's cool as hell. The only Problem with Shih Tzu's are is that they are racists. They HATE Labs and big dopey (I'm not aying stupid) doga like that... Well they pretty much don't have a lot of time for any dog that's not another Shih Tzu or a puppy... Yes they are little and foofy.. but the name doesn't mean Lion Dogs for nothing. His name is Chewy.

house full of dog junkies... wife runs office of town vet... three furry kids (2 shelties and a collie)... brilliant animals... especially the male sheltie... collie is extremely smart but VERY vocal...

great site for you: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/

do your homework and make sure the pet matches your lifestyle... if the dog needs a lot of room, exercise and/or attention... can you provide it? will you be home enuf or can care be provided in the earliest months? many dogs learn key traits in this time... stuck in a crate all day early on may cause irreparable problems for some breeds... does the dog need to be social? will their be kids around? go to a local dog show... talk to folks...

where to get the pet.. vets generally say from a breeder... rumor has it breeders provide dogs to pet shops they can't sell or won't sell because they don't want to hurt their rep.. take that with a grain of salt.. altho I know of true to life cases where breeders sold dogs that came from lines with health issues to pet shops... but I know of folks who have had no problems... animal rescues can be a good source but you don't know what abuse the animal may have been subject to and you may not be ready to deal with the result and sadly, the animal is not fixable... greyhounds are often mistreated because their sheer size intimidates but they really are a very gentle animal... mini daschs are very entertaining, incessant diggers (after all that was a key purpose of making the breed) so make sure that won't be a problem... and ya gotta be ready for that piercing yip from the little guy... they have an ego well beyond their size.. they think they're rottweilers... brave little ones...

thoroughbred vs mix... the theory is that with a thoroughbred you have access to general personality traits... so you have a better knowledge of what to expect... know just as many folks with a mix that adore their furry kids... we've always had thoroughbreds except once (and that once was a disaster)...

About mini-dachs being incessant diggers.....SO TRUE. This absolutely cracks me up. Good thing I have no leather furniture.

Most of this advice on here is really helpful & interesting. What I'm getting so far is that both the mini-wein & the greyhound are very friendly, but the wein is much more vivrant and outgoing where the greyhound is much more shy and emotionally attached. I feel I am quite familiar with the dachsund, but I'm trying to really get a feel for the greyhound. I'll be living in an open space (so he could run) but if I went to take him anywhere, I'm afraid he wouldn't appreciate my Prelude too much, so for that matter alone, I might have to choose the dach...though I might sell my car anyways. Tough call!

I appreciate all the great advice so far though and I this thread with some of its stories is cracking me up. :)

I was a dog owner for 16 year so I thought that would qualify me. What do you want to know about dogs? Nowadays I'm a pussy fan. :p
I love Nathan's hot dogs, and corndogs. I might have to bring some Nathan's to grill on Saturday before the game. Mmmmmmm

What were you talking about? A friend rescued a greyhound that had been used in racing. The thing has a lot of energy. He has to take it to work with him and take it on a walk a couple times a day. Greyhounds don't have a lot of hair so that is good.
