Does anyone here have a job in intercollegiate athletics? Student affairs/services?

I'm in the Student Affairs master's program at Wright State, and I'm beginning to look for internship/practicum opportunities. The Athletic Department at WSU is under the Division of Student Affiars at WSU, which provides me an excuse to kinda get in the back door of the field of intercollegiate athletics. I'm interested in academic support services for athletes, as well as NCAA compliance.

I just started a job as an academic advisor at Clark State, which dovetails nicely with my interests. Next school year I should be able to get an assistantship of some sort, and I'll also have my internship and practicum experiences, which need to be different from each other. I'm hoping to work for a DI program when it's all said and done. I've already spoke with Wright State's AD about an internship opportunity, and I want to look at UD, maybe OSU (I not sure if my fandom would be an asset or a burden in this case). Also, because I started taking classes two quarters earlier than everyone else in my cohort, it may afford me to take some time off of classes and go out-of-state for an internship instead. There are all kinds of possibilities.

What I'm really trying to get at though... I guess I'm seeing if there are any contacts out here on BP (not the most professional way to find people, I know, but I take what I can get!) Or, is there anybody who's gone through a bit of what I'm going through, who can give some advice or words of wisdom?

I have some outside observer experience in this area. Although I don't work for the Athletic Dept. here, believe me when I say I'm close enough to see the inner workings. I'd give you one piece of advice, network. It is not even close to what you know, it's 99% WHO you know. An AD changes, even an associate AD , and you can be out on your ass before you can check your messages. As I said, I don't work in that area but I see it all the time. Good Luck! By the way, I went to UD for a year and wish I'd have spent a few more in retrospect, very, very, nice place!! At least around 1978.

Jlb,

Glad to see another higher ed professional on the board. I got my masters in student affairs from Ohio State in 2002, have five years experience in academic and career advising, and just started my PhD in Higher Ed Administration at Kent this fall.

From my experience networking at professional conferences is the key. Of course there are the two big professional organizations, ACPA and NASPA. You might want to see if they have a sub-division that addresses athletics. My guess is there is probably a professional organization specifically for student affairs in athletics as well. I don't know any off the top of my head, but I'll check with my faculty adviser. She is very active in ACPA and several other professional organizations, so she might know of one.
