Div 1A postseason - Applying the proposed options to past seasons

Recently it was released that TPTB are looking at a number of potential options to replace the current BCS system for post season play.

Those options include...

1. BCS With Adjustments. Basically continue the current arrangement whereby no teams play more than one post-season game, with the following enhancements: (a) change or eliminate annual automatic qualification except for contracts negotiated between conferences and
bowls, (b) eliminate the limit on the number of participants from each conference, (c) play the games nearer to January 1, (d) create a format that would accommodate different conference champions participating in different bowl games.

2. Original ?Plus One.? After the bowl games are played, select two teams for the championship game.

3. Four-team event, with seeded semi-finals and a championship game.

4. Four Teams Plus. The four highest-ranked teams meet in two games except that the Big Ten and Pac-12 champions will always play in the Rose Bowl. If the Big Ten champion, the Pac-12 champion, or both are in the top four, that team (or those two teams) would play in the Rose Bowl and the other two games would be filled by the other four highest-ranked teams.
Select two teams for the championship game after those three games have been played.
I decided to go back and see what past seasons during the BCS years would have looked like under each of the proposed changes, except for option #1. Retroactively applying option #1 involved more speculation than I wanted to deal with.

For option #3 (4 team playoff) I broke it down into three separate sub-options.
A: The four highest teams in the BCS standings.
B: The three highest ranked conference champions plus the highest ranked 'wildcard' (Independent or non-champion team).
C: The four highest ranked conference champions only.

1998-99 Season

What really happened (Rankings per Final AP poll):

Fiesta Bowl/BCSCG: #1 Tennessee (12-0) over #2 Florida St. (11-1) : 23-16
Rose Bowl: #9 Wisconsin (10-1) over #6 UCLA (10-1) : 38-31
Sugar Bowl: #3 Ohio State (10-1) over #8 Texas A&M (11-2) : 24-14
Orange Bowl: #7 Florida (9-2) over #18 Syracuse (8-3): 31-10

What would have happened (BCS Rankings):

Original Plus One:

Rose: #9 Wisconson* vs #5 UCLA*
Fiesta: #6 Texas A&M* vs #4 Ohio State

Orange: #2 Florida St.* vs #7 Arizona

Tennessee, A&M, FSU, UCLA & Wisconsin locked in due to contractual obligations as conference champs.
Ohio State, Kansas St & 'Zona are the at large bids.

Assumptions:
Fiesta offers national draw Ohio State
Sugar invites Kansas St (highest ranked team on the board)

Note: With the 'longest since played in Rose last' tiebreaker removed it is possible Wisconsin would not be champs over Ohio State.

Four Team Event:

Semifinal 2: #3 Kansas St vs #2 FSU*

3x Highest Ranked Champs + 1x Wildcard

4x Highest Ranked Champs Only

Semifinal 1: #6 Texas A&M (#5 UCLA)* vs #1 Tennessee*
Semifinal 2: #5 UCLA (#4 Ohio State)* vs #2 FSU*

(The changes shown in parenthesis are if you use the current B1G tiebreaker rather than the one in place at the time)

Four Teams Plus:

Sugar: #2 FSU* vs #3 Kansas St.
Fiesta: #1 Tennessee* vs #4 Ohio St.

Orange: #14 Georgia Tech/#6 Texas A&M vs #8 Florida
Rose: #9 Wisconsin* vs #5 UCLA*
(Winners of Sugar & Fiesta play in CG. Orange & Rose have no NC implications)

you've got Georgia as SEC Champ in one spot, and LSU in another.

UGA won it that year.
LSU didn't even win the West in '02 (Arky did on final play of our game against them that year)
