I saw a post a few days ago that highlighted that statistically, he was a pretty good umpire. It was just that when he got it wrong, he got it VERY wrong in the most important parts of the game. It makes me think he's just an egomaniac and enjoyed the story being about him instead of the game.

That, or he was on the take. Or both.
