Okay, I had a strange idea in the shower this morning -- is Ohio State the only D1A team with a plant product for a mascot? Let's do a little research and find out:

B10: two cats, three rodents, four varieties of human, one bird-like thing and a plant product

B12: two cats, five varieties of human (includes land thieves), two bovines, a bird, a weather formation, and a member of the ursine family

BEast: two cats, a canine, a bovine, a bird and three varieties of human

ACC: one bird, one insect, one amphibian, one mythologial creature, one cat, one canine, one weather formation, four human caricatures, and whatever the f--k a Hokie is

CUSA: two cats, two birds, an equine, a bovine, two weather formations, three varieties of human, and a now-defunct Chevrolet SUV

Ind: three varieties of human and a bird

MAC: two birds, one cat, one bovine, one equine, one canine, one indian tribe, one ambiguous indian tribe/bird, two undefineables (Zips and Golden Flashes)

MWC: four varieties of human, one cat, one bird, one amphibian, one canine, one bovine

P10: two cats, two ursines, one canine, one rodent, one bird, one mythologial creature, one variety of human, and one color (unofficial symbol is a tree)

SEC: three cats, two dogs, one bird, one reptile, one pig, three varieties of human, and a fairly entertaining movie starring Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman

Sun Belt: five varieties of humans (including two teams named "Indians"), one cat, one bird, and an angry color

WAC: three canines, and equine, five varieties of humans (includes two "Aggies")

So, my shower theory was correct. The Ohio State Buckeyes are the only team in D1A who have a plant product as their official mascot. Stanford's tree is unofficial, though it's used as a symbol.

You forgot 'one weapon of mass destruction'

Also, I was wondering this morning, is San Diego State under fire for their 'Aztec' mascot? Or is an 'extinct' indian tribe okie dokey with the NCAA?

Ah, crap. I did forget the Rockets. I was trying to come up with a category for them that was also unique. They're the only team with a man-made object for a mascot, unless you count my characterization of the UAB Blazers.

Edit: The Aztecs got off the hook because of international borders. No white guilt by the NCAA, since the Aztecs were never in what is now the U.S., nor were they killed by anyone of Anglo descent.

Just to beat this one into the ground, here are your totals:

Humans: 45.5*
Cats: 17
Birds: 14.5*
Canines: 9
Bovines: 6
Rodents: 4
Weather phenomena: 5
Colors (includes angry colors): 2
Reptiles/Amphibians: 3
Equines: 3
Mythological Creatures: 3
Ursines (Bears): 3
Undefineable: 1
Insects: 1
Plants: 1
Pigs: 1
Marsupial: 1
WMDs: 1

* Eastern Michigan University Hurons counted as half-Indian tribe, half-bird, as they can't seem to get their symbolism straight.

I hope that adds up. lol

Edit: I've recategorized the Zips as a Marsupial and moved the Hokies to birds. Thanks to sandgk, the Crimson Tide are now a weather phenomenon.

We can also entertain debate on the Demon Deacons...are they primarily "Demon", making them mythological, or are they primarily "Deacons", making them mortal humans. Given their play on the field, I'm more inclined to consider them mortal? :p

My award for the most unfortunately ironic nickname in D1A is the Tulane Green Wave. :( Oops.

Crimson Tide wound up as a color instead of as a movie, but I think I liked the movie better.

A -The Crimson Tide is a recurring phenomenon in the Gulf States, characterized by a red-hued algal bloom. DO NOT eat oysters soon after a Crimson Tide - They make you very ill. :!
B - A Deacon is a well respected member of a church, so I always thought Demon Deacons was redolent of the Salem witch trials - church-going folk run amok and all that. :wink2:
C - Ironic names - Tulane and the Green Wave, ain't that the truth (here's hoping they are back on their feet soon).

Stanford may go by the nickname "Cardinal," but as far as this thread goes Stanford's mascot is actually a tree. So no, the Buckeyes aren't the only one. (Just saw this picture on the ESPN Bottom-10 and remembered this thread).
