Tyson Strachan (born October 30, 1984) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman for the Florida Panthers. He was drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the fifth round, 137th overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

Playing career

He played at Ohio State University for four seasons (2003?07), and with the Albany River Rats in the American Hockey League in 2006-07 for one game, before joining the Peoria Rivermen (AHL) and Las Vegas Wranglers (ECHL) in 2007-08.

He was signed as a free agent by the St. Louis Blues on October 9, 2008. During the 2008?09 season he was recalled from the Peoria Rivermen under emergency conditions on December 16, 2008, after playing in two pre-season games with the Blues and 28 games for the Rivermen. He made his NHL debut on December 18, against the Washington Capitals at Washington and three night later scored his first NHL Point (assist) on December 21 against the Boston Bruins, at St. Louis.
Florida Panthers

On July 12, 2011, Strachan agreed to one-year, two-way deal with Florida Panthers. On January, 23, 2012, he was called up to replace injured defenceman Dmitri Kulikov. On February 1, 2012, he recorded his 1st point as a Panther with an assist on a Mikael Samuelsson goal on a wrist shot from almost Center Ice. He recorded his 1st career goal on February 12, 2012 against Evgeni Nabokov of the New York Islanders. It was a one-timer from the point off a faceoff win by Marcel Goc.

WASHINGTON -- It was just a few weeks ago when Tyson Strachan found it hard to crack the Panthers lineup.

A healthy scratch during Florida?s five-game losing streak, Strachan was put back into the lineup Jan. 31 against Winnipeg. That night, the Panthers finally won their second game of the season.

Strachan has played every game since. And, with Keaton Ellerby being traded to Los Angeles on Friday, Strachan found himself as one of Florida?s six defensemen going into Saturday?s game at Washington.

The Panthers will continue to carry seven defensemen once Ed Jovanovski?s knee allows him to return to the lineup. For now, however, Strachan is making the most of his opportunity.

?This sums up pro hockey right there. You always have to be ready,? Strachan said. ?It?s tough when you don?t play, so I?m happy to be back in the lineup ? and I?m especially happy we?ve been able to pick up some points on the road.?

If Strachan found a silver lining in being a healthy scratch, it was that the time out of the lineup allowed him to get in better shape.

Even though Strachan spent the lockout playing for the Panthers? AHL affiliate in San Antonio, the defenseman missed five weeks leading into the start of the NHL season because of injury.

Like many who hadn?t been playing during the work stoppage, Strachan found himself a touch unprepared for the rigors of training camp and a quick start to the season.

?Our expectations were fairly high for him, especially since he had the opportunity to play all year,? coach Kevin Dineen said.

?Those are the kind of guys who were supposed to be game-ready. I didn?t think that was the case. But he worked hard while being a healthy scratch. His play is improving.?

Strachan fully admits to not having a great training camp but said he feels like he?s now in midseason form. In Saturday?s 5-0 loss to the Capitals, Strachan had three hits and a blocked shot.

?I wasn?t ready for camp,? he said. ?I was able to get my feet back under myself. I needed some of those bag skates and the coaches were great to me. They got me going.?

ARLINGTON, Va. – Tyson Strachan said he talked with Mike Green after signing as a free agent with the Washington Capitals in July.

The two defensemen discussed intangibles that might help Strachan make the club's NHL roster in 2013-14.

“They just kind of talked about missing a little bit of that edge on the back end,” Strachan said. “There's definitely a lot of talented players there. I want to come and play my game. That's just going to be a big, physical body that's making outlet passes and playing good D.

“Really, I'm not here to wow anybody. I'm just here to play my game and, at the end of the day, they'll make the decisions based on what they need to make them on.”

With Mike Green questionable for Friday’s game at the Detroit Red Wings, the Capitals have recalled veteran Tyson Strachan from the AHL’s Hershey Bears.

Strachan, 29, has four assists and a plus-3 rating in 11 games with the Bears this season and will meet the Capitals in Detroit. George Richards, the Florida Panthers’ beat writer for the Miami Herald, ran into Strachan at the Charlotte airport and tweeted where the defenseman was headed.

The Capitals signed Strachan to a one-year, two-way contract worth $550,000 at the NHL level this summer. Strachan has played in 120 NHL games over the past five seasons and was a regular for the Panthers last year, appearing in 38 games in the lockout-shortened campaign.
