D Nate Guenin (Colorado Avalanche)

Hopewell's Guenin back in the NHL

Nate Guenin is back in the NHL. The Hopewell native and Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman made his 2010-11 NHL regular-season debut Saturday night against the Minnesota Wild. Guenin, who started the season with Columbus' AHL affiliate in Springfield, Mass., was recalled by the Blue Jackets on an emergency basis late Friday night. Signed by Columbus as a free agent this summer and among the Blue Jackets' final cuts to make the NHL roster, Guenin was a plus-1 in four games with Springfield. Said Falcons head coach Rob Riley: "He's been a great leader for us these first two weeks. He's been a warrior since he's been here. We are going to miss him, but he deserves to be up and we are happy for him." Guenin, 27, had logged time in 14 NHL games with Philadelphia and Pittsburgh over five pro seasons.

Avalanche to play longshots Nate Guenin and Nick Holden in NHL openers
By Mike Chambers
The Denver Post

Journeymen NHL defensemen Nate Guenin and Nick Holden were considered longshots to even make the Avalanche's opening-night roster. But first-year coach Patrick Roy said each will play during Colorado's first two games.

Guenin will be paired with Tyson Barrie in Wednesday's season-opener against the Anaheim Ducks at the Pepsi Center, and Holden will replace Guenin on Friday against the visiting Nashville Predators.

Roy said the rotation is deserved while Ryan Wilson recovers from a knee injury.

Wilson, who is on injured reserve, skated on his own before practice Tuesday. When he returns, Guenin or Holden will likely be sent down to Lake Erie of the American Hockey League. Both are on two-way contracts so they will not have to clear waivers.

Guenin, 30, and the 26-year-old Holden have combined to play in just 39 NHL regular-season games. Guenin, from Aliquippa, Pa., has played 32 games since 2006 with the Philadelphia Flyers (12), Pittsburgh Penguins (two), Columbus Blue Jackets (three) and Anaheim Ducks (15). He was drafted by the New York Rangers in 2002 after playing four years at Ohio State.

He also made opening-night rosters in Philadelphia and Anaheim.

"If I'm in the lineup tomorrow I'll be excited and do everything I can to help out," Guenin said after practice and before Roy announced the lineup. "I've always felt this is where I belong and it's just up to me to get here."

Avalanche's Nate Guenin took long, hard road to reach NHL

Nate Guenin (Denver Post file)
In Pittsburgh, of all places, Steel City-area product Nate Guenin was told by Patrick Roy to "get a place" in Denver. In other words, the journeyman defenseman was told by the Avalanche coach and Hockey Hall of Famer that he had finally made it to the big leagues.

At age 30, Guenin is gladly being kicked out of a NHL team's hotel for the first time in his career. It's the green light he patiently waited for since graduating from Ohio State in 2006.

"Pretty special," Guenin said of Roy's three words he will never forget.

Guenin entered the season having played just 32 combined NHL games for Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Columbus and Anaheim. But he has played every game for the 8-1 Avalanche, including a career-high 20 minutes, 10 seconds in front of family and friends in Monday's 1-0 victory at Pittsburgh. He is a primary penalty killer for the league's top-rated team in that department (90.3 percent), and he helped eliminate the world- class talent that is Sidney Crosby during the Penguins' seven power plays Monday.

"Great challenge," Guenin said of playing against Crosby. "We were on the PK a lot. But we have just as good of forwards on our team. I mean, I go against them every day in practice, so it really prepares you for guys like that."

I've heard Guenin's name called a number if times in the first two games of the Min-Col series - for good reasons.

I don't remember him being much of a prospect when he was here, but it certainly seems he's made a nice career out of it!
