After missing four games from injury, the junior forward is off the injury report
Ohio State women’s basketball received good news Sunday afternoon, when the Big Ten availability report didn’t include Cotie McMahon for the first time in four games.
Before the Buckeyes’ road game against the Ohio Bobcats, McMahon’s name first appeared as out on the availability report. McMahon suffered a right lower leg injury, requiring the junior forward to wear a boot. Head coach Kevin McGuff confirmed the injury came in practice.
Over those four games missed, McMahon never confirmed if the injury was long term or short term, opting to keep her status as day-to-day. However, McMahon practiced earlier this week during media availability, showing that the forward was approaching a return.
That meant Ohio State was without their dynamic forward who averaged 16.1 points per game, a career high in McMahon’s third season with Ohio State.
In McMahon’s place, redshirt sophomore Kennedy Cambridge slid into the starting five, playing a third guard role with senior forward/guard Taylor Thierry moving from the third guard to a more traditional forward.
Fortunately for the Buckeyes, the opponents in those four games were mid-major sides that the Scarlet and Gray had little trouble defeating. Cambridge averaged 7.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists in McMahon’s place.
Despite being available, there’s no guarantee that it means McMahon starts, although it’s unlikely that McGuff brings McMahon back if she’s unable to contribute.
McMahon has 39 points and 15 rebounds combined in two games against the Fighting Illini, with 22 points against them on Jan. 8, 2023. That’s when Illinois amassed a 17-point lead in the third quarter that McMahon was part of erasing in less than a quarter. That day, McMahon added four rebounds and four assists, including
