considering buying a new radio

I have never heard of anyone that has HD radio rave about it. Really it is kind of pointless IMO. With the pending merger (assuming it doesn't get shot down) will make XM/sirius radio even better. I have sirius and couldn't be happier. It is worth the 43 cents a day, and once you get it regular radio will be the most annoying thing in the world to listen to.

yes I have the plug and play unit which I use in my vehicle and the boom box I purchased for my office building (guess that answers that ) I almost never lose my reception, the only time I did was driving through the mountains of Pennsylvania and that was only for a few minutes. I work in an all brick building with only a few windows so I have my antenna ran outside and sitting on the fire escape. If you decide on sirius look into the Stilleto unit, it is a portable unit much like a ipod. It is expensive but you can take it anywhere.

Somewhere there's a thread for Satellite radio. Check that out for other people's opinions.

I don't know anything about XM.

But I can tell you about Sirius. Many people have bought it over XM simply because of Howard Stern. I haven't cared much for Stern since sometime while he was on broadcast radio. I chose it because it claimed that it would broadcast all the Buckeye games. But that was retarded for me, since I would just watch all of the games from inside the 'Shoe or on TV. But I have used it to listen to NFL games. I think it advertises all NFL games.

Sirius has a couple of music stations that are pretty good, and that's saying something coming from me, because I am VERY picky when it comes to music. And you can have it alert you when specific artists/songs come on another channel, so you can zurp right to that station, if you want. I'd imagine that XM has similar features.

Sirius also has ESPN radio, which is okay, if you feel like hearing a bunch of yutzes who enjoy speaking about crap. I think one of the coolest stations, though, is the one that has Rivals Radio. For three hours a day, five days a week (or more) they talk about nothing but college sports. And 90% of that is football. Awesome.

I don't know about HD radio. All I know is that when I'm in someone else's car, and listening to his radio, I realize how spoiled I am with my Sirius.

I have Sirius and I love it, could not live without it. The Man is totally right about not being able to stand regular radio once you get used to having Satellite. I have a Plug and Play unit as well. IAB has a stiletto, he could give you more info on that. XM is not as good IMO, it does not have as good of music channels and they don't have the NFL. The merger will make it even better, you will have it all then.

the stiletto is very nice, i love being able to copy mp3s and being able to save songs/shows while they are on. my only compliant is that when you are using it without the car/home adapters you can notice some reception loss at times, not horrible, but it happens from time to time.

Don't even bother with HD radio. The programming on terrestrial radio these days is crap compared to satellite offers. Not to mention all the commercials. Sure, the sound quality is better than standard radio, but for FM stations in HD it's only roughly CD quality, which in this day and age, is hardly a revelation.

I have had Sirius for over a year, and I love it. It has commercial-free music and coast-to-coast reception. Like Zurp, I am also picky about my music and Siruis plays stuff that I would never get to hear on regular radio. I have a dock in my car, on my stereo receiver, and also a boombox. Plus I can stream any of the music stations on my computer if I want - it's built into the subscription. As has already been mentioned, it's superior for sports. I can catch every Browns game here in Cincy because of it.

when you say so superior its laughable how so?

obviously i want the hockey on xm. sirius has a canadian radio station for sports (assuming they talk lots of hockey). on the nfl im neutral i dont have a team, sure it would be nice to have every game and the ticker but i wouldnt use it that often. so usage would be college bball, fball music hockey and guys sitting around with mullets talking hockey. i guess thats why my first inclination is to go with xm, i want guys in mullets talking about hockey not some schmuck like bruce hooley...
