34-yard TD run on 4th down in final seconds lifts Stallions

When DeSales fullback Jeff Walsh slammed his bowling ball of a body into the middle of the line on fourth-and-inches last night in the final seconds against Watterson, it was clear that he had picked up a first down.

"It was a straight give and all I wanted was to get 1 yard, or maybe a few more, so we could set up a field goal," said Walsh, a 5-foot-9, 185-pound senior making his first carry of the game.

Then a strange thing happened as the overflow crowd at DeSales held its collective breath.

Walsh disappeared into the pile, re-emerged as a spinning top, then dashed around the corner all the way to the end zone with a 34-yard touchdown run that gave the Stallions a 13-6 victory.

CANTON -- It wasn't exactly "Win one for the Gipper," but the halftime speech by DeSales coach Ryan Wiggins last night was just as effective. The Stallions were trailing by four points and Canfield had had the ball for more than 17 minutes.

"We got 24 minutes left in our season, so you decide how it's going to end," Wiggins told the team.

The Stallions responded and shut out the Cardinals in the second half for a 27-10 victory in a Division II regional semifinal in Fawcett Stadium. DeSales (12-0) will meet Louisville next Friday in a regional final.

DeSales puts forth another strong effort

Regardless of its experience, depth or talent level, the DeSales football team -- unreasonable as it might seem -- will be compared with previous ones. It's part of life for a program regarded among the state's elite year after year.

The Stallions understand and even embrace the lofty gauge of success.

A 28-7 nonconference win over visiting New Albany last night in the Chris Spielman Gridiron Classic did plenty to rebuff notions that the Stallions might slip in 2008 after being ranked No. 1 in the state in Division II much of last season.

DeSales gets revenge in regional final with tough running, run defense

MANSFIELD, Ohio -- Call it what you will, sweet revenge or just another regional title.

But as the DeSales players celebrated a 38-21 victory over Louisville in a Division II regional final last night, an assistant coach perhaps summed up the night best when he howled, "That's what DeSales football is all about."

The Stallions established the run, amassing 352 yards, and completely shut down the run, allowing the Leopards minus-13 yards.

Of course, the most important aspect was DeSales' harassment of Louisville quarterback Neal Seaman. With his team trailing all night, Seaman completed 25 of 46 passes for 300 yards but was intercepted three times, sacked five times and had about a half-dozen balls batted down at the line of scrimmage.

Taking on Youngstown Cardinal Mooney for the title tomorrow. Don't know much about DeSales but they better play stout run defense against the Cardinals. Curious to see how Griffin does in this one.

DeSales facing familiar foe in first round of playoffs

It isn't completely the case, but it seems it wouldn't be football postseason time without a DeSales-Watterson rematch.

The two teams will square off for the 55th time in the series in the first round of the Division III Region 10 playoffs Saturday, Nov. 6, at Hagely Field (7 p.m.).

The Stallions (5-5), having faced a difficult schedule while fighting through a litany of injuries, are viewing this as second chance, even given their No. 8 seed position.

It's also very cool that they are playing at Hagley Field. When did they start using that field again? Last time I was on that field it showed serious signs of neglect. But that was probably 10 years ago.

I've got loads of childhood memories of that field. Dad played for Mike Hagley at Columbus North, then coached at North in the 50s and 60s when I was a kid.

They've been using Hagley for quite some time now, last I heard, Watterson was trying to get a field built on campus.

I was at Watterson from 2001-2005 and while we won states, the best part of the that stretch was we never lost to Desales.
