High School Colerain upset by St.Xavier 7-0

wow thats not good at all for colerain, especially with tyler e. lee coming in in a couple of weeks.
Well St. X ain't exactly chopped liver. Its the first game of the year for both teams with a near neutral crowd. One of the beauty's of HS football is that the teams really do cycle on a 1 or 2 year basis. So who knows, St. X is up, Colerain off in the first game, who's to say Tyler Lee comes into Columbus with the same firepower they carried to their Div5 championship last year?

However, this does probably get everyones blood up in the GMC though, that's for sure.

And there was this predictive quote from the Enquirer pre-season coverage --
St. Xavier coach Steve Specht knows some have predicted his team will upset the Cardinals, but he said Colerain is the favorite until proven otherwise.
St X. was #2 in the Enquirer poll, Colerain #1.

Hell yeah...heck of a game. GCL swept today. Expect a QB change at Colerain either this week or after next week if Gary Pride struggles again. Colerain threw the ball 4 times, three of these were picked off. St. X's defense this year will be one of the best in the state. Steve Specht is a defensive genius, if he has a whole offseason to prepare for a team as one-dimensional as Colerain, no doubt he's going to find a way to stop the whole 5 plays they run. X hasn't even installed a nickel package yet, that's how focused they were on Colerain.

Seeing as this is the recruiting forum, here's a little info on some prospects: Connor looked good, one of the few bright spots on Colerain's O. He had Bomber defenders on their asses all day. Terrence Sherrer didn't really impress me (Minnesota recruit), he had one big run for one of Colerain's few first downs, but other than that he was nowhere to be found. Tyler Moeller and Cobrani Mixon looked alright. St. X's lone score came off a turnover deep in Colerain territory, both defenses were phenomenal.

There are quite a few D-1 prospects in X's 2008 class in my opinion. Coach Specht has said that he hasn't seen a class this good in a long time. They went undefeated last year as freshmen, and several are playing up with varsity, so much so that the JV team got killed by Colerain because half the would-be starters are playing with varsity.

On offense, sophomore Darius Ashley was the star last year and got a lot of carries, splitting time with starter Chris Cionni. In time, Ashley could take over the starting job, if not he'll definitely have it next year all to himself. He's a big time player, had a long run today.

Brian? Milligan is the starting kicker and punter, and was a solid reciever last year as well. One of our starting recievers recently tore his ACL, and Milligan came out of nowhere and is now starting at WR as well. He's a smaller guy, no taller than 5'7'' or 5'8'', so without growing I'm not sure he'll be a big D-1 prospect, but the kid is a gamer. He took some hits today and popped right back up. He also appeared to have a hell of a leg kicking.

Then there are the linebackers. We have a couple great linebackers seeing a lot of time. Fred Craig is a beast, he was brought up to varsity as a freshman last year for the playoffs, something that you don't see every year at X. He's the best lacrosse player in the school too, amazing athlete. He'll be a D-1 recruit for sure. Nick Schneider also saw a lot of time today at LB. These two were huge in shutting down Colerain's option offense. These two guys are both very big and play tough too.

The thing that I was really happy with was seeing X attack the option from the snap, instead of trying to react to what Colerain does as so many opponents did last year. I really would've liked to see teams go after them last year. Obviously, they still probably wouldn't have been beaten, but so often you'd see teams reacting to where the ball was going and with the athletes Colerain has year in and year out that's just not going to work. Stopping Dominic Goodman and Mister Simpson after they've already taken off just isn't going to work. X's defense went after the ball right from the snap and that aggressiveness helped shut down the Colerain O. I'll say it again, Steve Specht is a defensive genius and he certainly outcoached Kerry Coombs today.

There aren't really any big time D-1 prospects in X's 2007 class, which is regarded as one of the weakest to come through the school in recent years, but the current sophomore class is certainly one to keep an eye on. I wouldn't be suprised if X finally brings home that elusive state championship under Specht's leadership with some great playmakers in the next few years.

I'm actually not that surprised by this. Like someone pointed out, St. X and most of the rest of the GCL teams are tough every year. Also, as I was telling my buddy out here in Phoenix (he's and Elder grad), Goodman was a freak for Colerain last year. I really thought they could struggle early trying to replace him.

very true...Colerain has a sophomre QB who looked sooo much better then Pride in the pre-season, that you have to wonder why, or if, he didn't get a look at starting.

Connor looked very good yesterday...But X used Connor's ability to their advantage. X played a 3-2 allingment and allowed Connor to go free from his guard spot and bury the LB's...but the DE on that side crashed down on the fullback from Connor's vacated spot (sounds easy, but you need speed from that spot and x had it) and x brought their safeties off the edge vacated by the DE to bury Pride...and Colerain didn't have an answer...Goodman would have used his throwin ability to exploit this, but Pride is too short, too inexperienced and, dare I say, he looked too scared.

Tyler Moeller didn't have the big stats, but his mere presence forced X to run the ball and roll their passing game away from his side ALL game. Tyler still had several QB pressures and a sack.

Colerain's OOS Opponent Tyler Lee Wins vs Chaminade (FL)

Robert E Lee (aka Tyler Lee HS) had a win on Saturday against a highly touted Chaminade Madonna (FL) team.

RAIDERS ANSWER QUESTIONS IN VICTORY OVER CHAMINADE

By CHRIS PARRY, Staff Writer
08/28/2005

Robert E. Lee entered Saturday's season opener against Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade Madonna with a few questions: How would senior Preston Hill respond to his first quarterback start since his sophomore season? How would an inexperienced offensive line handle Chaminade Madonna's defense filled with Division I prospects, and how would Lee's defense make up for the loss of starting free safety Tekerrein Cuba, who was out with a knee injury?

One thing Lee head coach Mike Owens did not have any questions about was returning senior running back Jason Williams.
And Williams showed everyone why Saturday night at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.

The senior carried 28 times for 259 yards and scored four rushing touchdowns to help lead Lee past Chaminade-Madonna, 34-28.

"We were excited to get out there, and we just left it all on the field," Williams said. "I told my linemen, if they block, I'll run hard."

Williams kept his word, breaking more than one tackle on several of his runs.

With the game tied 7-7 midway through the second quarter, Williams crashed through three Chaminade-Madonna tacklers for a 27-yard touchdown. In the second half, Williams was pushed back by the defensive surge at the line of scrimmage, before resetting himself and racing 58 yards for a touchdown. His final score of the night featured more of the same as the Lee back twisted out of tackles to get into the open field before waltzing 21 yards for the touchdown.

"Williams is very physical, and the way he hammered people tonight was phenomenal," said Lee head coach Mike Owens. "Our offensive line did a great job also. They were coming off on them and sealing them up. We had some great kick-outs, and Jason hit those creases."

There was more than one great tailback on the field Saturday night. Chaminade-Madonna senior Willie Floyd used his unrelenting quickness and speed to frustrate Lee to the tune of 221 yards and two touchdowns.

"He's great," Owens said of Floyd. "That guy is full speed on his second step. On the second step, he's gone. And he has great vision and is a big-time player."

Chaminade-Madonna fullback Xavier Stinson finished with 14 carries for 73 yards. All told, the Lions out-rushed Lee 317 to 315.

The difference of the game was a costly penalty and turnover by Chaminade-Madonna. The Lions had a long touchdown pass called back because of a holding penalty in the second half and fumbled the ball near Lee's goal line to stop another scoring chance in the first half.

Lee is 1-0 heading into its first road test Friday at Waco (0-1). The Red Raiders are also 1-0 in their first of two games against out-of-state opponents.

"It's great to be 1-0, especially against a team like that," Owens said. "There is not a player over there who isn't a player. They do a great job with a good scheme, and their two running backs are something else.

"If they could throw the football a little more, they would be seriously dangerous."

Lee is ranked No. 3 in Class 5A by the Associated Press. The Red Raiders will next take on the Waco Lions at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Waco I.S.D. Stadium.

Williams said Saturday's win is the first of many successes Lee will achieve this season.

"This win is the first step, and we've hopefully got 14 more," Williams concluded. "All the way to state."
