I don't understand the universal message board cry for "sources" and "links". As if everything ever said is linked.....and that makes it official.

...well, without a link, there are a few valid inferences:

1) The poster is repeating some second or third hand info he received from someone else repeating info from another unknown source...not very reliable.

2) The poster has personal conversations with Lebron James where the discussion has been held and the information is 100% solid. Possible...but very unlikely.

I'd rather see the linked source for the info.

that's fine for things like what recruit has what offers, but useless in this case.

How so? Info is either credible or it is BS.

Example: I heard somewhere that Jim Tressel said he would love to coach the Browns some day.

Remember that one and the fireball it created? Complete BS that was taken as Gospel.

There was no link to him saying that...however, there were plenty of links for speculation.

That's an extreme example where it fits. I don't think a link about where LBJ said he would play college basketball is required since it was never a thought in his mind.

Some things just don't have links....it doesn't mean they aren't true.

I don't understand why it is useless in this case... Lebron has stated in public that he most likely would have played for Ohio State IF he played college ball (which is what this off-topic discussion is about) and reporters have recorded this statement. If that is actually true or not is known only to Lebron but it can only be deduced from his statement that he would have favored the Buckeyes. Siting those sources verifies his supposed intentions.

So basically you are telling me that unproven info from someone without a proven line of credibility should simply be accepted as truth?

Like I said, I'd prefer the link...

It's not that a link is required for speculative nature like this but links to credible news source have been provided showing he would have favored Ohio State. In my eyes that gets precedence over something that has not been proven.

EDIT: I believe I'm saying the same thing osugrad is saying, but in different words. :)

Did he even go through the recruiting process? I doubt Ben Martin had Tennessee in his mind when thinking about where to go, but he ended up there. If he could have forgone college and known about it at an early age, I'm sure he would say the same thing about Ohio State.

I think if a person is trying to a fact to back up his/her stance on a subject, a link to an article/graphic/op-ed piece is a necessary evil. Many people try to explain themselves and just can't word it right for everyone to get the jist of what they are saying. A link to an article further explaining the point of view helps a lot.

First, thanks for the split (I'm assuming osugrad)

I don't know if Lebron went through any part of the recruiting process... I didn't follow him that close (and still don't). This whole argument is pure speculation so your example of Ben Martin doesn't hold water. I've already said that we don't know where Lebron would have ended up but he HAS publicly stated that he probably would have went to Ohio State. That's ALL we have to go on. If you can't get past that then there's no use continuing this discussion.

thanks to the person who PMed me this link....which is proof that links aren't the be all end all:

James has yet to say he will definitely be in the draft, even hinting Thursday he might still pursue colleges and listed his five choices as North Carolina, Duke, Florida, Ohio State and Louisville. But sources close to James say any talk of going to college is a farce, and James' only interest in college is the free recruiting trips he's entitled to as a senior in high school.

Does anybody really believe Lebron thought about going to college?
