The Cincinnati Bengals have some injury issues in the secondary coming into Week 1, and that will open the door for a former first-round draft pick. With cornerback Trae Waynes out vs. the Minnesota Vikings, Eli Apple will be asked to step up.

In his Monday press conference, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor announced that Waynes has been ruled out for Week 1. Apple will now slot in as Cincinnati’s starting cornerback, per Field Yates of ESPN, and he will have a tough matchup.

“This bumps Eli Apple into a starting role on Sunday,” Yates tweeted. “His assignment: Justin Jefferson or Adam Thielen.”

2021 Outlook/Roster Odds
There is absolutely no guarantee Apple makes the Bengals 53-man roster when the team breaks camp.

Cornerbacks Trae Waynes, Mike Hilton and Chidobe Awuzie are all surely ahead of Apple on the depth chart, which will likely put him in a competition with Darius Phillips, Jalen Davis, Tony Brown, and Winston Rose for a backup/special teams role.

However, given Apple’s experience and brief history with Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, who served as Apple’s defensive backs coach in New York, there’s a chance that - if healthy - he will have a leg up in the pursuit of a backup spot.

None of the other guys behind the three starters have a firm hold on a spot. Phillips made 38 total tackles and grabbed a pick last season, Davis played in just six games. Brown played in 13 games, made three starts and forced two fumbles. And Rose spent 2020 on and off the practice squad.

Thus, if the Bengals keep the usual five to six corners, Apple should be in pretty good position to land a backup role. However, if he struggles in camp, preseason games, or suffers an injury, he’ll likely be a cap casualty.

Absolutely redemption, he caught so much flack and he just shut everyone up this year for the most part. Bengals wouldn't be in the SB without Apple, I'll say that with 100% confidence. He's had such a great rebound year in Cincy. Just don't leave Ohio Eli haha.

ELI APPLE HAS LOGGED ON. I've talked about Eli Apple's switch from the shyest and most reserved starter on Ohio State's roster to one of the most aggressive shit-talkers I've ever seen, but it's never going to stop being glorious.

5-7 years ago, I never would have imagined waiting for Eli Apple to log onto Twitter after a game, but that's where I was on Sunday evening.

He did not disappoint.

Oh, and that dropped pick-six? Turns out he just got a little excited.



Are his online antics over the top? Maybe! But as someone who has never made a Super Bowl after being cast aside by multiple teams and labeled as a "locker room cancer," it's hard for me to judge!
