Well, very nice win to start off the season.

The first big thing that sticks out is that they shot 62% from beyond the arc. I'm pretty sure that's better than any game last season. 13-21.

The other big difference from last year is bench scoring. Last year, more often than not, we'd struggle to get double figures from the bench. Tonight: 49 points. Very nice.

Eric Snow listened and did not shoot the ball at all. He did have 4 assists and no turnovers.

Hughes had an off night shooting(2-9), but was perfect from the line(6-6), and led the team with 6 assists and 2 steals.

LeBron is LeBron, 31 pts, 9-16fg, 6/7 3fg(nice) and 6-7 from the charity stripe, also a nice improvement.

Jones and Marshall both played well off the bench.

Nice start by the Cavs, just don't lay an egg during the next 3 on the road. That will be a big test considering how bad they were down the stretch last year, on the road. @ San Antonio, @ Memphis and @ Toronto.

I was really impressed with the game last night, but tomorrow will be a huge test for the Cavs. I want to see how they play on the road against the NBA champs. At least through the first 3 quarters the Spurs didn't look to be clicking on a cylinders Tuesday, so we'll see if they look better tomorrow.

Didn't get to see the game, but the box score looks nice. I was kinda happy to see that they were going with snow to start mainly becuase of what brutus pointed out ... they really needed some fire off the bench, and now with jones and marshall coming, they'll be in alot better shape. I'm looking forward to their first national TV game to get a look.

On a side note, the 82-game regular season lasts a long time, and I can imagine this thread getting to fred davis proportions. I'm all for avoiding redundant threads, but this thing could look ridiculous in april. Maybe a little more specific title would help?

You heard here first we take out the defending champs in our next game.

We have one hell of a team and we don't have to back down from anyone. We have the best player in the league and we have two more all-stars to paly with him this year, and we have 3-point shooting. I am just going to sit back and enjoy this season b/c it could be a thing of beauty.

I have to say, this new owner knows how to wow a crowd. Free t-shirt, free magnet schedule, free blinky-lighty thingy for every fan who walked in the building. Great entertainment throughout the night (yes, apart from the game) - they have a new drum corps (the 'Q-Stix'), a new dance team (the 'Scream Team'), the Cavs girls are significantly more attractive and racier in their wardrobe and routines, and Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child performed at the half. I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan of her music, but she's certainly a big ticket. I was very impressed. Oh, and you can now buy liquor (Jack, Tanqueray, Dewar's, whatever) as well as brew. Gilbert sold me. I intend to go to a lot more games this year.

That said, I was thrilled to see them play the way they did. Yes, it's the Nookcy Hornets, but still...everything went as planned. As mentioned, Snow was not asked to do anything on offense, Marshall is as good a shooter as advertised, Gooden played very physically, and LeBron is simply the most electric, charismatic figure in the NBA right now. He literally had the crowd eating from the palm of his hand when he starting dropping those threes on Nookcy. I believe the O/U for Cavs wins this year is 49.5 - if opening night was any indication, 50 is well within reach.

Before we get to the Cavs last night:

Every year for the last couple of years I say to myself that this is the year I am going to get back into the NBA, and usually by the end of the first week or so I have lost interest. I officially swore off pro basketball when the Knicks replaced one of the worst GMs in history (Scott Layden) with the absolute worst (Isiah Thomas). He finally makes a smart move in landing Larry Brown, and then deals for Eddy Curry, an out of shape center with a heart condition, to play for Brown in an offense where the center has to get up and down the floor. Isiah signs Jerome James, who has never played in a Brown-style offense, and he pulls a hamstring before he even gets unpacked. So the Knicks go into the season with two out of shape centers, and only 4 guards on the roster, one of which will have to play the wing (Quentin Richardson) and one who needs to retire (Penny Hardaway). Glad I don't have to care about the Knicks anymore...

So on to the Cavs...here's what I saw last night:

I figure if Danny Ferry can spend $150 million during the offseason, I can at least try and pay attention for the first month of the season.

Love the intensity on defense...Mike Brown is going to have them playing great defense this year.

How long does Eric Snow start over Damon Jones? Snow's defense and command of the offense is great with such dynamic scorers on the floor as James, Hughes and Marshall, but considering Jones and James can alterante bringing the ball up the floor and Jones can make teams pay for doubling James of Hughes, I think he ends up starting before long. I checked the box score this moring and Snow didn't even attempt a shot last night.

If the Cavs don't lead the league in rebounding I will be surprised. First off Brown will have them playing tough defense which should mean more rebounds. Ilgauskas is great on the offensive glass and Gooden is a great defensive rebounder. Add Marshall and Hughes who both are great board men for being combos and you have a great rebounding club. And Lebron was pretty solid on the glass, last time I checked.

If they play like they did last night on a consistent basis, they run away with the Central.

Westend,
I figured we'd call it regular season, since we had a separate thread for the preseason. Any suggestions what to call it would be great.
You won't have to wait long, the game tomorrow is a national ESPN game.

Vr,
I was really impressed with that damn scream team. One male dancer was unbelievable. I really didn't care for the blond bimbo that talked during most of the breaks. I alsi didn't care for Ronnie Duncan as the announcer. He's trying to make it about Ronnie Duncan and not the team. Just say who made the point/foul and move on. Don't try to make the pronunciation of the Cavs players last 5 seconds each!

Wadc,
I think Snow is in the perfect place(if he has to be on the team). If he comes off the bench, then our bench scoring takes a big hit. All he had to do now is play tight defense and lob a pass or 2 to Lebron, Z, Hughes.... At this point, Jones is more valuable off the bench playing with Marshall.
Ideally, I would just cut Snow and start Jones with Wilks as the backup, but if Snow has to be on the roster, then he does the least amount of damage as a starter where he would not be expected to score. Just my opinion, and it's a known fact I'm not a fan of Snow.

Don't forget when Varajeo (sp) comes back, he's by far, our best offensive rebounder. Things are looking up.

excellent point...at least we are in agreement that Snow should not be in a Cavs jersey.

Varejao might be by favorite player on the team. 110% night in and night out. In the meantime, Pavolic at least showed he had a pulse last night.

Rumor has it Larry Brown really needs guards in NY. Snow would be worth anything we could get in a trade as long as they take his contract.

This could end up being way too perfect. Imagine this...it's only a matter of time before Larry Brown and Stephon "this is my team" Marbury go at it. Danny Ferry can easily trick Isiah into eating Snow's contract for a six pack of cold beer. I mean Thomas is the guy who gave $30 million to Jerome James and $60 million to Eddy Curry (in the same offseason, mind you)...yet the best player in that trade with Chicago may still end up being Sweetney. Then today I read that Isiah wants Darius Miles, who the Blazers would happily move if NY agrees to send back some talent with contracts that are up at the end of the year. So Isiah counters with Malik Rose...the biggest dead weight on the roster, who still has something like 3 years and $20 million left on his contract. Ferry must be next in line to bend Isiah over the table.

Snows contract for 1 large pepperoni ny style pizza.

That would be a nice contract to get off the books.

Speaking of contracts off the books, I see Lasagna Flop play 5 minutes for
the Mavs and had 1 rb. Well worth the 3yr/4.5Mil they paid him. Can you say STIFF !!!

after the Jeri Welsch debacle, I would figure that Cavs fans wouldnt be anxious to discuss trades

Come on Tibs at least let Ferry make a mistake before you bash him. You can't fault the current regime for the Welsch mistake. The only good move that Paxson made (besides lucking into Lebron) was muffing the Boozer deal, which made him trade Tony Battie (sp?) for Gooden and Wild Thing.
