The Hockey News: The Hot List: The Hot List: Ready for the WJC
3. Zac Dalpe, C ? Penticton Vees (BCHL): If you haven?t heard of Zac Dalpe yet, don?t worry; he has a tendency to make noise in a hurry. After attracting little interest from the NCAA two summers ago, Dalpe blew the doors off the competition with the Ontario Jr. B Stratford Cullitons. Three games into the season, he had a scholarship to Ohio State.
?I think I had 14 points in three games,? Dalpe recalled. That outburst also caught the attention of the Jr. A Vees, who operate on the other side of the country in B.C.
?It was kind of random, to be honest,? Dalpe said of the interest. Nevertheless, it was a challenge he wanted to take. ?I wanted to mature and grow up in B.C. and as soon as I came over I fell in love with it.?
And the Vees are falling in love with Dalpe. Much like fellow Jr. A prospect Joe Colborne, Dalpe was just 5-foot-8 a year and a half ago; he now stands 6-foot-1. Scouts are high on his stellar two-way play and willingness to battle for pucks, something Dalpe is more than happy to keep working on.
?I want to come out of the corner with the puck more often than not,? he said. With 39 points in 30 games (and just six penalty minutes), Dalpe seems to be doing just that. Draft eligible in 2008.
this should get some of you non hockey fans to watch some of the draft as zac could be a first rounder...

McK: 26
THN: 29 Comparable: Travis Zajac

From TSN: A late bloomer who left his home in Ontario to play in the B.C. Jr. A League, Dalpe showed enough to merit some first-round consideration. Best quality is his shot but some think he is mis-cast as a centre and plays better as a hard-shooting winger.

From NHL Central Scouting: He has a really quick release on his shot, he is a very busy player and he plays with a lot of energy out there. He is a player that is constantly in motion. He is offensive minded, but plays well defensively too and has made huge improvements from last year – he developed out of nowhere and had a really good year in the BCHL.

posted this in the OSU hockey thread but figured it should be shared here also. Zac is really catching onto the game fast at Ohio State. He is going to be fun to watch as the season goes on.

Buckeye Dalpe Named CCHA Rookie of the Week

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Zac Dalpe, a freshman forward on the Ohio State men?s hockey team from Paris, Ontario, has been named the CCHA Rookie of the Week, the Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced Monday. Dalpe, a second-round draft pick of the Carolina Hurricanes, led the Buckeyes to a series split with Lake Superior State over the weekend, posting a team-best four points in the two games combined.

In the Buckeyes? come-from-behind win Saturday vs. the Lakers, Dalpe was named the first star of the game after posting a team season-high two goals and three points. He tied the game at 1 in the second period with his first career goal and set up Corey Elkins? game-tying power-play goal in the third. Dalpe sealed the win with an empty-net goal from center ice with 47 seconds left. Friday against the Lakers, Dalpe had his first career point when he set up Hunter Bishop?s goal 14 seconds into the contest.

Dalpe and the Buckeyes return to action with a two-game non-conference series at No. 4 Denver this weekend. The teams will meet at 9:37 p.m. ET Friday and at 9:07 p.m. ET Saturday at Magness Arena in Denver.

Meet a Buckeye: Zac Dalpe

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State forward Zac Dalpe should be savoring a terrific start to the college hockey season. But smiles are as sporadic as wins right now for the high-scoring Buckeye. Dalpe leads the Central Collegiate Hockey Association with 14 points (seven goals, seven assists), yet the Buckeyes are 5-8-1 after dropping two games last weekend at Ferris State, including a 6-5 overtime loss on Saturday in which they squandered a three-goal lead in the third period. Dalpe, a native of Paris, Ontario, and the Buckeyes return to action tonight against Bemidji State in the Subway Classic in Grand Forks, N.D. He is a high draft pick of the Carolina Hurricanes, but says he's focused entirely on life at OSU:

Q: You had a career-high four points on Saturday night, but the team blew a three-goal lead. Is that tough to take?

A: It was pretty frustrating, to say the least. But we looked at some video and saw a lot of the stuff we were doing wrong, so that's a positive in itself.

Q: Can you put a finger on what's behind your team's slow start after reaching the NCAA Tournament last season?

A: We're definitely thinking a lot about it. We have been really up and down. We have good games followed by bad ones. Our mentality has to be 'go, go, go.' If you don't practice hard, you don't play well.

Q: You're only a 19-year-old sophomore, but you're taking on a leadership role. What type of leader are you?

A: I think different guys lead in different ways. I guess I would try to lead more by example. Sergio Somma is a more vocal leader. He's the guy who wears his heart on his sleeve and holds guys accountable. Peter Boyd and Mathieu Picard are also good leaders. But I think everyone wants to be a leader in his way.

Former Buckeye Zac Dalpe breaks the ice in NHL career

Former Buckeye Zac Dalpe is playing with the Carolina Hurricanes.

On Oct. 7, as the Carolina Hurricanes were preparing to begin the 2010 season, 20-year-old Zac Dalpe sat in the locker room of the Hartwall Arena, anxiously awaiting the start of his first NHL game. Just 364 days earlier, Dalpe was still a teenager at Ohio State, getting ready to start his sophomore season against tiny Quinnipiac University. Now, he was in the NHL and about to play (in Helsinki, Finland, of all places) against the Minnesota Wild.

Shortly before the puck dropped, Hurricanes head coach Paul Maurice pulled Dalpe and fellow rookie Jeff Skinner aside to remind them how significant the night would be.

"He said, ?You only get one game in your career to be your first game,' and it was awesome," Dalpe recalled. "It was great to start off that way."

Dalpe added to the evening of firsts in the second period, scoring his first point with an assist on a goal from Anton Babchuk. His point helped make the difference in the Hurricanes' 4-3 victory.

Although he hasn't added to his point total since that game, Dalpe is establishing himself as an aggressive, offensive-minded center on the Hurricanes' fourth line.

And although he'd grown accustomed to being a first-line player in college and junior hockey, Dalpe is happy with any role he can get in the NHL this early in his career.

"In the NHL, it's fun to be a rookie," Dalpe said. "I love it every day and I don't take it for granted."

Three goals in his last five games. :banger:

OSU has put out some NHL talent lately. RJ Umberger for the Jackets, Kesler is becoming one of the best two-way players in the NHL and has been tearing it up this year, David Steckel has solidified himself as a solid 4th liner for the Capitals. And Dalpe, obviously.

There are a couple others I don't know too much about. Rod Pelley for NJ and Tyson Strachan for the Blues. Nate Guenin has bounced around a bit, he had some NHL time with the Pens last year and was traded to the Jackets. Currently in Anaheim's system.

Pretty awesome.

Named the NHL's 36th best prospect by HockeysFuture.com.

Boychuk's AHL teammate and #36 in the rankings, center Zac Dalpe, has been one of the top rookies in that league this season. The former Ohio State University star has easily made the transition to the pro game after two strong seasons in the NCAA. Like Boychuk, Dalpe spent time with the Hurricanes this season, and appears to be on a fast track to a NHL career.

Zac Dalpe: The former second round pick has played 41 games with the Canes over three seasons, but has not been able to stick with the team. He has been a scoring threat for the Charlotte Checkers and next season will be make-or-break for him to land a spot in the NHL. Even if he cannot make it on the Hurricanes? roster, Dalpe will still help the Checkers score. Verdict: Re-Sign.
