C.J. Barnett (Director of Player Development)

When you listen to the press conferences, it's almost funny how all of the other reporter's defer to Tim May. When two reporters start to ask a question at the same time, if one of them is Tim May, the other reporter always shuts up immediately.

Kudos to C.J. for not caving in. You could tell that May was a little taken aback by having someone stand up to him, but C.J. seemed to be thinking, "I really don't care if you've been on the Buckeye Beat since DBB was in school here. I'm not going to give you the answer you're looking for so ask something else or STFU."

Ohio State football: Barnett jumps back in the mix for defense
Thursday August 11, 2011
By Tim May
The Columbus Dispatch

As much as things have changed for Ohio State since last season, the first days of preseason camp have offered at least one familiar sight: safety C.J. Barnett running around making plays.

?Part of the blueprint that we have is be aggressive and relentless,? Barnett said. ?That?s what I try to do, and that?s what everybody on the team tries to do.?

Last August, Barnett stepped forward to grab one of the starting safety spots, and he roamed the field creating havoc against the University of Miami in the second game, only to be felled by a season-ending injury to his right knee.

His comeback from reconstructive surgery has been a long time in the making. He was held out of serious action during spring drills so the knee could fully heal. Yet to hear him tell it, there?s little disappointment about the extended intermission.

?Stuff happens,? Barnett said. ?It?s all good. We still won that game and we had a good season, so it?s not that bad.?

As Barnett was putting a team spin on his own misfortune, his teammates were happy to see him back on the practice field.

?One thing about C.J., he knows the defense very well,? cornerback Travis Howard said. ?He knows where he has to be, when he has to be there, and he is a guy who is going to anticipate where the ball is going to go. So it allows our defense to make more plays.?

It's like Tim May had already written the article and needed to get CJ to say the quotes he had already written. I do normally like Tim's stuff so I'm not going to dog on him much. I like most of the guys that follow OSU sports really, except for common man and the torg or that ass clown bruce hooley.

Having reported this spring, this is very true. I really like May, but it was almost impossible to get a question in while he was around. When I started to try and assert my questions, I don't think he was all that thrilled by the way he looked back at me. Again, I really like May and think he does a fantastic job, but you will hear him run most of the interviews regardless of how many other reporters are there.

BARNETT LOOKS SOLID, READY TO EMERGE ? Last season as a red-shirt freshman, C.J. Barnett surprised many by earning the starting job at strong safety. He looked fantastic in the Buckeyes? first two games of the season against Marshall and Miami, Fla., flying around the field and laying the wood to the opposition.

However, during the prime-time tilt against Miami in week two, Barnett suffered an injury to his right knee forcing him to have season-ending surgery.

Barnett doesn?t appear to be suffering any ill-effects during the first week of camp. In fact, he?s playing at a higher level than a year ago, anticipating what the offense is going to do and making plays. He?s already recorded one interception (on Graham) for a touchdown in practice.

Co-defensive coordinator Paul Haynes attributes Barnett?s progress to his work in the film room.

?He?s a student of the game,? Haynes said of Barnett. ?C.J. had a great role model in Kurt Coleman, you know, being from the same high school. Kurt was that way, so it?s easy for him to sit there and do all those things.

?Two of the best guys I?ve ever had here was Kurt and Donte Whitner as far as being students of the game, making sure that you take notes instead of just going in and watching film. That?s what (Barnett) did, he started seeing the importance of it ? Now, we?ve got to turn the page and make sure he becomes a play-maker and is productive.?

So far, so good.

I can't lie, I am a bit suprised to hear how well CJ has been coming along. I wasn't quite as high on him as everyone else was last year because I felt he was lost out there. He's been tearing it up in practice and is considered the most well-rounded saftey on the team.

Consider me confident about our secondary play in general this year. Our defense is going to be rockin'.

I was really high on him from what little I saw last year against Marshall and Miami. I saw him "flash" - getting to balls and ball carriers in a hurry. He just made plays. Maybe he was out of position on occasion, but I thought the kid was on his way to having a great season. If he stays healthy, everyone will know about him by the end of this year.

Agreed on all points. This is the big, physical, athletic, ball-hawking type safety, that our D did not have last year. (Not to mention Moeller is back , Christian Bryant is healthy, and OJ has made improvements and is becoming more of a vocal leader.)

Meet a Buckeye: Safety C.J. Barnett
Friday September 2, 2011
Bill Rabinowitz
The Columbus Dispatch

C.J. Barnett was emerging as one of the young standouts of the Ohio State secondary last year. He had a huge hit on a Miami receiver on one play and broke up a touchdown pass on another. But his coming-out party was aborted when he suffered torn ligaments in his right knee later in the Miami game, ending his season. Now he?s back and has earned a starting spot for the Buckeyes.

Q - What does C.J. stand for?

A - Charles Junior.

Q - Tell me about your family.

A - I have a mom and a stepdad and a younger sister, who?s 15. She does basketball and track. That?s pretty much it. Kind of boring. For an outside family, I?ve got a dog and a girlfriend.

Q - You were an honor-roll student in high school, right?

A - I had all A?s until one of my last classes and I got a B. I think my grade-point average was like a 3.98.

Q - What was the B in?

A - Trigonometry or pre-calculus my junior year. I think the teacher had a little something against me. I don?t know what it was.

Q - How bummed were you?

A - I was mad because grades were really important. To get all A?s throughout high school was pretty cool. When I got that B, it kind of put me down a little bit, but it?s all right.

Q - Where?d that desire to excel in school come from?

A - My mom always stressed getting good grades. And if you?re going to do something, you might as well do it to the best of your ability.
