When you have a roster full of freshman and sophomores, you are bound to have some growing pains in the early part of the season. Facing their first true road game of the season, Saturday afternoon can be chalked up to more growing pains as Ohio State lost to Connecticut 75-55.

Connecticut came out of the gates dominating the paint in the first half as their first two offensive possessions ended in dunks over defenseless Ohio State players. This would be a continued theme throughout the first half as the Huskies controlled the paint on both sides of the ball outscoring the Buckeyes 24-10 down low.

The dominance down low led to numerous open shots for the Huskie back court players and they did not disappoint in the first half. Connecticut shot an astounding 63% from the field and 62% form three-point land in the first half building a 45-24 halftime lead. Omar Calhoun played a brilliant first half scoring 11 points on 4 of 4 shooting from the field.

Offensively in the first half, Ohio State tried to push the pace but the young team struggled to take care of the ball and turned the ball over seven times. As frustration mounted, the offense became very stagnant and went over six minutes without scoring midway through the half. The offense became very flustered and wound up settling for contested perimeter shot over and over. JaQuan Lyle had a rough first half going 0-6 from the field and turning the ball over twice. Jae’Sean Tate led all Buckeye scorers in the first half with 7 points on 2-6 shooting. Altogether, the Buckeyes shot only 31% from the field and 22% from three point territory.

As the second half started, the Buckeyes came out on fire bringing the game within 12 points early on. As things began to look like they were turning around, the Huskie offense began to click on all cylinders again. Connecticut went back to what worked in the first half and attacked the Buckeyes down-low where they were helpless all day. Connecticut wound up shooting 60% from the field and had five players reach double figures. They out-rebounded the Buckeyes 27-17. Omar Calhoun led all Huskies with 14 points on five of five shooting from the field.

The Buckeyes struggled all day from the field and only made 35% of their shots. Tate led all Buckeyes with 15 points and the old man on the team, junior Marc Loving, chipped in 14 points and 6 rebounds. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 4-5 on the year.

The Buckeyes take on Northern Illinois in Columbus on Wednesday in what is bound to be a raucous atmosphere. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET. Television coverage will be provided by BTN, radio by 97.1 and can be followed on GameTracker.
