On Monday and Tuesday, the Ohio State Women’s Golf (OSUWG) team teed it up at Westmoreland Country Club (Chicago, IL) for the Windy City Collegiate. This is a large, tough event. Of the 15 teams participating, Ohio State (ranked #35) is joined by nine teams ranked in the Golfweek Top 30. This is a three round (54 hole) event. The course is 6,291 yards long and plays to a par 72. The format is ‘play five count four’, where a school fields 5 players, and the low 4 scores for each round are counted. in addition, almost all teams had a 6th player play as an “Individual”.

The five players participating in the team score were: FR Niki Schroeder, R-SO Rio Watanabe, JR Katja Pogacar, JR Jessica Porvasnik and R-JR Zoe-Beth Brake. The Individual participant was FR Jaclyn Lee.

Overall

The Buckeyes finish in 10th place, with a team total of 877 (+13). From a team perspective, the 1st round (+7) wasn’t too bad of an opening round. The 2nd round (-4) was an exceptionally well played team round. The 3rd round sort of got away from the Buckeyes, shooting a team (+10). The 3rd round was the 2nd round flipped on its head. In the 3rd round, the Buckeyes had half the number of birdies and double the number of bogeys than their 2nd round. That is a significant swing. Below is the round by round scoring:

Par 72 Rd 1 Rd 2 Rd 3 Total
Team 295 284 298 877
Niki Schroeder 75 72 77 224
Rio Watanabe 72 70 75 217
Katja Pogacar 73 72 74 219
Jessica Porvasnik 77 73 74 224
Zoe-Beth Brake 75 70 75 220
Jaclyn Lee (I) 71 73 80 224

First Round

The Buckeyes shot a team score of 295 (+7), placing them in T-9th position. The Buckeyes were led by Rio Watanabe 72 (E) and Katja Pogacar 73 (+1). Niki Schroeder and Zoe-Beth Brake contributed 73’s to the team score. Jessica Porvasnik shot a 77 (+5).

Rio rang up 4 birdies and 4 bogeys in her opening round. Niki and Katja each scored 3 birdies, but double bogey for each dampened things a bit.

Jaclyn Lee had a solid round of 71 (-1) in Individual play. Beginning on the 10th hole, she stumbled a bit, bogeying 4 of her first 5 holes. A birdie on the par-5 15th hole kick-started her round. She birdied #18, then scored 3 birdies on her 2nd nine holes to shoot a 33 (-3) on that side.

Second Round

For the 2nd round, the Buckeyes improved significantly with a team score of 284 (-7), an eleven stroke improvement, which bumped them up to 7th place. The Buckeyes were led by Rio Watanabe 70 (-2) and Zoe-Beth Brake 70 (-2). Niki Schroeder 72 (E) and Katja Pogacar 72 (E) also contributed to the team score. Jessica Porvasnik shot a 73 (+1). This was really a good round of team golf by the Buckeyes. If the team’s “toss-out” score is 1 over par, everyone is playing well.

Rio and Zoe-Beth each scored 4 birdies on their rounds. Rio strung together 3 consecutive birdies on holes #15-#17. Zoe-Beth birdied two of her last three holes for a strong finish.

After two rounds, Rio sat at -2 for the tournament; Zoe-Beth and Katja were at +1 for the event. This is solid, consistent golf.

Jaclyn Lee continued her solid play in Individual action, shooting a 73 (+1), while recording 4 birdies.

Third Round

The 3rd round, unfortunately, didn’t work out that well for the Buckeyes. They shot a 298 (+10) dropping them 3 positions to 10th place. The Buckeyes were led by Jessica Porvasnik 74 (+2) and Katja Pogacar 74 (+2). Zoe-Beth Brake 75 (+3) and Rio Watanabe 75 (+3) contributed to the team score. Niki Schroeder 77 (+5) couldn’t overcome a so-so front 9.

Jaclyn Lee couldn’t get anything going in this round, shooting an 80 (+8) in individual play. She did have 2 birdies, but too many bogeys killed any momentum that she had.

Thoughts

This tournament featured a stellar 2nd round, but the final round got away from them. It doesn’t take much to be just enough off that one round’s par is the next’s round’s bogey. Or, birdie, for that matter.

Sifting through the chaff, here is a “what happened” snap-shot. They played the par 3’s very well, scoring an average of 2.98 strokes per hole, a total of -1 to par; good enough to rank 4th. They played the par 4’s to an average of 4.14 per hole, +26 to par, ranking them 11th. The par 4 scoring was a bit better this week than last, but in relation to the field, it slipped a bit. They played the par 5’s to an average of 4.98 per hole , -1 to par, ranking 9th.

In terms of “to par” scoring, Ohio State recorded 180 pars (of 270 holes played). That ranked them in 4th in number of pars, an improvement from last week. They did record 36 birdies, placing them 9th. They did not record any eagles this week.

Although the final round was a little dicey with the scoring, I see that this team is showing progress. Compared to the previous week, the cut the number of double bogeys in half and did not have any triple bogeys. The 6 players, team and Individual, had 7 double bogeys and were triple bogey free over the three rounds. This is an impressive improvement in course management. A higher number of the “bigger” scores, doubles & triples, are now bogeys. I’m sure the next goals are to “convert” these bogeys into pars and birdies.

The OSUWG next tees it up October 23-25 in Wilmington, NC at the Landfall Tradition.

Go Buckeyes!
