Coaches Jay Moseley and Brad Smith led the team into the Northwest this week, traveling to Portland, OR for the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational tournament, played at the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club. The 54 hole event, played Sunday and Monday, was played over two courses. Sunday’s first round was at the Ghost Creek course, which played at 6,834 yards to a par 71. The final two rounds were at the Witch Hollow course, which played at 7,015 yards to par 72.

The format was ‘play five count four’, where a school fields 5 players, and the low 4 scores for each round are counted. Fourteen teams participated in this event, including nine teams in the GolfWeek/Sagarin Top 25. This was a tough field and a steep hill to climb for the Buckeyes.

The participating players participating were: SR Tee-K Kelly, JR Addison Coll, JR Clark Engle, RS SO Josh Wick and FR Will Grimmer. This same combination played in OSU’s previous event.

Overall

The Buckeyes finished in 13th place this week, with a team total of 866 (+6). I told you this was a very strong field; Ohio State shot essentially the same team score as the previous week, but finished a few spots lower. This was a tough slog, but not for everyone..

The Buckeyes were paced by a career round (-7, 65) by Clark Engle that propelled him into a Top 5 finish. Clark finished -9 for the tournament. Tee-k Kelly scored consecutive 4-under 68’s to put him at T-19. place. Tee-k finished at -5 for the event. Player round by round scores, below:

Rd 1 Rd 2 Rd 3 Total
Team 292 281 291 864
Clark Engle 71 65 70 206
Josh Wick 75 79 75 229
Will Grimmer 72 74 78 224
Tee-k Kelly 74 68 68 210
Addison Coll 76 74 79 229

First Round

The Buckeyes played their 1st round on the Ghost Creek course and were spooked to an opening round of 292 (+8), placing them in 14th position. I told you it would be tough. The Buckeyes were led by Clark Engle 71 (E) and Will Grimmer 72 (+1). Tee-k Kelly 74 (+3) and Josh Wick 75 (+4) also contributed to the team score. Addison Coll was sidelined for the day with a 76 (+5).

Clark had a very steady 1 birdie-1 bogey round. Josh had an interesting round with 2 double bogeys, 2 birdies and an eagle 3 on the par-5 10th hole. Addison’s round was a roller coaster ride; a triple bogey, and double bogey, a birdie and an eagle.

Second Round

For the 2nd round, playing the par 72 Witch Hollow course, the Buckeyes shot a team total 281 (-7), an 11 stroke improvement! An 11 stroke swing on a higher par course is quite an achievement. How’d they do that? Let’s start with Clark Engle shooting a career best 65 (-7)! Clark shot 8 birdies (and 1 bogey) in his tour de force. Tee-k Kelly jumped into the fray with solid nines of 34 enroute to a 68 (-4). Tee-k had 5 birdies and a bogey for the round. Will Grimmer and Addison Coll each shot 74 (+2) to contribute to the team score. Josh Wick couldn’t get anything going with a 79 (+7).

Riding the ‘hot streak’, Clark (teeing off on #10) birdied 3 of 4 holes on his front side, then birdied 3 consecutive holes on his back side. He played the four par-5’s in 3-under par. Addison continued his “thrill ride” event with 5 birdies, but also stumbled with 2 double bogeys for the round.

Third Round

For the 3rd round, the Buckeyes shot a 293 (+5). The Buckeyes were led by Tee-K Kelly 68 (-4) and Clark Engle 70 (-2). Josh Wick 77 (+5) and Will Grimmer 78 (+6) also contributed to the team score. Addison Coll shot a 79 (+7).

Clark had his third consecutive round of par or better this week. It was great to see him back up a spectacular 2nd round with a sub-par 3rd round. Clark “sprinkled” 5 birdies in with 3 bogeys Tuesday. Tee-k shot his 2nd consecutive 4-under 68. Starting on the back 9, Tee-k bogeyed his first hole, then birdied 7 of his next 12 holes. That stretch of golf is just jaw-dropping. That had to have been a pleasure to watch. Speaking of “pleasures to watch”, Addison continued his thrill ride tournament by carding a birdie, an eagle and a quintuple bogey. Addison had 2 of Ohio State’s 2 eagles. That’s impressive.

Thoughts

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I felt the coaches are looking at different player combinations. They’ve seemingly settled in on the same lineup for consecutive events. We’ll see how this goes. if a player has a good week of practice, like any other sport, he’s earned a shot at the “starting” lineup. I think this team is loaded with good players, so regardless of who tees it up, the Buckeyes will be just fine.

Sifting through the chaff, here is a “what happened” snap-shot. They played the par 3’s okie-dokie, scoring an average of 3.21 strokes per hole, a total of +16 to par; good enough to rank 10th. They played the par 4’s to an average of 4.17 per hole, +21 to par, ranking them 15th. The team improved a bit in their par-4 scoring from last week, but it just wasn’t ‘up to par’ with their competitors this week. But, as long as they keep improving the raw scoring, it’ll work out. They played the par 5’s to an average of 4.83 per hole (an improvement from last week), a total of -12 to par, ranking 11th.

In terms of “to par” scoring, Ohio State recorded 162 pars (of 270 holes played), placing them in 7th position in that measure. They recorded 47 birdies, placing them 14th. They scored 3 eagles (2 by Addison Coll) for the event, tieing the for 4th position. As a side note, Addison’s 2 eagles were as many or more than 7 teams. So, there..

The OSUMG team has a week to R&R before heading down to Isleworth FL for the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational. The event runs from October 18th – 20th.

Go Buckeyes!
