Coaches Jay Moseley and Brad Smith led the team northwesterly again, this time to Glencoe, IL for the Windon Memorial tournament, played at the Lake Shore Country Club. The 54 hole event, played Sunday and Monday, is played on Lake Shore’s 6,844 yard, par 71 course.

The first two rounds (36 holes) were played Sunday and the third round was contested on Monday. The format is ‘play five count four’, where a school fields 5 players, and the low 4 scores for each round are counted. Fourteen teams participated in this event. The schools also have the opportunity to field a sixth player to participate as an individual.

The five players participating in the team score were: SR Tee-K Kelly, RS SR Grant Weaver, JR Clark Engle, RS SO Josh Wick and FR Will Grimmer. SR Sean Busch is participating as an Individual. (Players in bold played in previous event).

Overall

The Buckeyes grabbed another 6th place finish, with a team total of 856 (+4). They finished 1 stroke out of 5th place (UC Davis) and another stroke out of 4th place (Princeton). Purdue won the event with a record setting 830 (-22). so realistically the other 13 teams were playing for 2nd place. It was that kind of tournament.

The Buckeyes placed two players in the Top Ten. Clark Engle and Josh Wick each shot 211 (-3). This is the first tournament this season where Ohio State placed two players in the Top Ten.

However, Ohio State did put together three solid rounds this week. I get a sense that things are starting to click. It just takes a couple well played 9’s to get a player’s confidence up. Frankly, this is good progress.

First Round

The Buckeyes had a great start in the first round, shooting a team score of 283 (-1) in the morning round, placing them in 3rd position. The Buckeyes were led by Tee-K Kelly 70 (-1) and Josh Wick 70 (-1). Clark Engle 71 (E) and Will Grimmer 72 (+1) also contributed to the team score. Grant Weaver was sidelined with a 77 (+6). In Individual play, Sean Busch shot an opening round 74 (+4) that despite 3 birdies on the front 9, was marred by a triple bogey 7 on the 16th hole.

Tee-K had a colorful scorecard, recording 5 bogeys and 6 birdies. Josh’s round was similar, with 4 birdies and 3 bogeys. Will recorded 3 birdies, but a double bogey on #15 undid much of that work. The Buckeyes managed the 421 yard 2nd hole (4 birdies, 1 bogey) and the 4th 426 yds) and 5th (455 yds) holes well, recording 2 birdies on each hole. However, they did struggle with the 436 yard 15th hole (birdie, bogey, 2 double bogeys).

Second Round

For the 2nd round, the Buckeyes shot a team total 286 (+2), putting them at (+1) and in 4th place after two rounds. They were led by Josh Wick 68 (-3) and Grant Weaver 72 (+1). Clark Engle,, Tee-K Kelly and Will Grimmer all shot 73 (+2) to round out the team scoring. Sean Busch shot a 78 (+7) in Individual play.

The Buckeyes went on a bit of a tear on the front 9, with the six players recording 13 birdies! That is a lot of red numbers on the scorecard. Clark and Josh had 4 birdies each to shoot (-3) 33’s. That’s some serious scoring. Josh kept his round going with 2 birdies/2 bogeys on the back 9 to finish his round at (-3). Clark stumbled on the 15th hole with a triple bogey, but ended his round with a birdie on #18 to finish on a positive note.

Third Round

For the 3rd round, the Buckeyes got things pretty well figured out, shooting a 287 (+3). This wasn’t too bad of a round, but UC Davis and Princeton bettered Ohio State by enough to slide the Buckeyes down two slots. The Buckeyes were led by Clark Engle 67 (-4) and Will Grimmer 71 (E). Josh Wick 73 (+2) and Tee-k Kelly 76 (+5) also contributed to the team score. Grant Weaver rounded out the team portion with a 77 (+6). Sean Busch shot 79 (+8) in Individual competition.

Clark had a good front 9, shooting 35 (-1), but outclassed that with his back 9 32 (-3). He birdied his closing three holes in a strong finish to his round. This has to be encouraging to the coaches, and to the team.

Thoughts

I mentioned last week that I felt the coaches are looking at different player combinations. You can see that, with two different players (Grant Weaver, Josh Wick) on the travel team and a third player (Sean Busch) playing as an Individual, rather than Team, for this event.

I know that the team wanted a better finish, but I see some progress. Unlike last week, they did not have a round that “got away” from them. They were sharp and competitive all three rounds. You should expect to see some uneven performances as the coaching staff sorts through lineup combinations. With that said, the upper classmen need to step up to provide stability.

Sifting through the chaff, here is a “what happened” snap-shot. They played the par 3’s so-so, scoring an average of 3.13 strokes per hole, a total of +8 to par; good enough to rank 10th. They played the par 4’s to an average of 4.10 per hole, +16 to par, ranking them 3rd. The team is gradually improving their performance on the par 4’s .They played the par 5’s to an average of 4.87 per hole, a total of -6 to par, ranking 6th.

In terms of “to par” scoring, Ohio State recorded 158 pars (of 324 holes played), placing them in 14th position in that measure. They did record 50 birdies, placing them 4th. They scored no eagles for the event.

Here’s how close the team scoring was, and how it doesn’t take much to make a difference. Ohio State was edged by UC Davis by 1 stroke and by Princeton by 3 strokes. Ohio State had 4 more bogeys than UC Davis and 9 more than Princeton. If each of the “scoring” golfers had scored 1 less bogey in one round, OSU would have retained 4th place. The margin is that thin. Yes, every shot counts.

The OSUMG team has a short turnaround by heading out to Portland, Oregon for the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational. The event runs from October 4th – 6th.

Go Buckeyes!
